Release Courtesy of Western Connecticut Sports Information
Danbury, Conn. - Molly Meehan (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Laura Hedden (East Greenbush, N.Y.) scored second-half goals for the Clark University women's soccer team and the visiting Cougars held on for a dramatic 2-1 victory over Western Connecticut State University at The WAC on Thursday night.
Hedden's game-winner came with 1:56 remaining in regulation, meaning half of her team-leading four goals have come in the 88th minute or later.
WestConn raced out to a 1-0 lead when Kelli Veras converted a header off a corner kick from Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, Mass.) in the 16th minute of play.
All three goals on the night were similar in the way they developed.
The Cougars knotted the game 2:13 into the second half when Charlotte Bowman (Peterborough, N.H.) lofted her corner kick to the center of the box, in the direction of Meehan. The sophomore forward headed her third goal of the season into the top left back corner of the net.
As the clock wound down in regulation, Bowman, again from the corner, found Hedden open in the goal mouth and she quickly headed the ball past WestConn keeper Amanda Simon (Brick, N.J.).
Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) made seven saves and earned the win in goal for the Cougars, while Simon made 11 saves for WestConn.
Clark had a 17-12 shot advantage on the night.
The Colonials have now dropped fourth of their last five games and fall to 4-6 on the season while Clark improves to 5-4 on the year and has put together back-to-back wins twice in a season for the first time since 2007.
