Field Hockey: New England College Stymies Cougars, 2-1

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. - Behind ten saves from junior netminder Mary Roux, visiting New England College used two first half goals to knock off of host Clark University, 2-1, on Saturday at Granger Field.

With the Pilgrims leading 2-1 in the final five minutes, Roux made her biggest stop of the game - a kick save on a breakaway shot by Clark freshman Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.), which turned out to be the Cougar's best scoring chance in the second half.

NEC's Miranda Tinsman got the Pilgrims on the board first at the 2:27 mark with help from Amanda Naimie.

Clark answered back exactly seven minutes later when Katherine Rowe (Fort Myer, Va.) scored an unassisted tally to even the score.

Things remained the same until 24:47 when Pilgrim freshman Emily Kutcha and Ashley Simula teamed up for Kutcha's third goal of the season.

New England College outshot the Cougars 18-15 and also held an edge in penalty corners (9-2).

Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made 11 saves in net for the Cougars, who slip to 1-1 on the season. Clark will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to UMass-Dartmouth for a meeting with the Corsairs beginning at 7 p.m., while the Pilgrims host Wellesley on Wednesday.
