Baseball Defeats Daniel Webster College, 19-5

WORCESTER, MASS. 4/16/09 - Clark University erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning on the way to handing Daniel Webster College a 19-5 loss in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) and freshman Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) led Clarks 17-hit attack with three hits apiece. Hollingsworth went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while DeLorenzo batted 3-for-3 with a pair of runs. Juniors Steve DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) and Phil DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) each had two hits with an RBI. Freshman Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.) was the final multiple hitter with two hits.

Freshman Nathan Marshall (Groveton, N.H.) registered two hits and an RBI for Daniel Webster (3-19).

The Eagles got out in front early with RBI hits from Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) and Peter Plansky (Litchfield, N.H.) to lead 2-0 in the first inning. But it was all Clark from there. The Cougars benefited from a Daniel Webster error, a run-producing hit by DeLorenzo and two bases-loaded walks to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the frame.

Clark (11-18) batted around in the fourth, scoring nine runs on five hits, and then scored three more runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

Daniel Webster got three runs back in the seventh on RBI hits by junior Christal Fitzgerald (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Satoshi Kurata (Numazu City, Japan).

Freshman Nick Winchell (Scituate, R.I.) (3-2) pitched six innings to notch his third win of the season.

Plansky (0-1) took the loss for Daniel Webster.

Clark will host MIT in a key NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday (2:30 p.m.)
