Lacrosse Wins Second Straight; Routs Norwich University, 13-4
WORCESTER, MASS. 03/28/09 - The Clark University men's lacrosse team won its second game in a row, defeating Norwich University, 13-6, in its Pilgrim League opener on Saturday night at Granger Field.
The Cougars (2-6, 1-0 Pilgrim) used a balanced scoring attack in the win. Senior Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists while junior Jeremy Urquhart (Falmouth, Maine) tallied three goals and two helpers. Freshman Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) also scored a pair of goals. Freshman Phil Winslow (North Providence, R.I.), sophomore Eugene Arsenault (South Portland, Maine), junior JC Tsagarakis (Stonington, Conn.) and sophomore Ben Stuart (Cumberland, Maine) added one goal each.
Clark took a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Roche had a hand in all five goals, scoring all four of his markers in the period and assisting on the other.
After Johnson and Urquhart notched unassisted goals to increase Clark's lead to 7-0, Norwich finally broke through when Tyler Nicoll (Ogden, Utah) scored his first goal of the night at the 7:39 mark of the second period.
Nicoll led the Cadets (0-2, 0-1 Pilgrim) with three goals, while Kristopher Bleach (Cranbury, N.J.) also scored for Norwich.
Three players saw action in goal for Clark. Senior Tyler Campbell (Portland, Ore.) earned the win, making two saves. Freshman Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) (0 saves) was untested in goal, while junior Jon Gendron (South Portland, Maine) stopped two shots for the Cougars.
Sophomore Ryan Leroux (Potsdam, N.Y.) turned aside six shots for Norwich.
Clark will host Plymouth State University in non-conference action on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
