Softball Sweeps Smith College, 5-0 & 10-3
NORTHAMPTON, MASS. 03/27/09 - The Clark University softball team swept Smith College 5-0 and 10-3 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader in Northampton, Mass., on Friday night.
The Cougars raised its overall record to 6-12 and evened to 2-2 in league play. Smith fell to 3-10 (0-2 NEWMAC).
In the opener, junior Melissa Traft (Milton, Mass.) (1-8) earned her first win of the season. She tossed a complete game five-hitter, fanning two and not issuing any walks.
Junior Chelsea Proulx (Franklin, N.H.) had three hits to lead Clark's 11-hit attack. Junior Lauren Blake (Oakland, Maine) and freshman Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) added two hits each. Sophomore Heather Richards (Glastonbury, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Sophomore Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) scattered six hits to pick up the win in the second game.
Junior Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cougars, who also got multiple hits from Blake, Coakley, Richards and Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.).
Clark will host Babson College in a conference twinbill on Saturday (Noon).
