Baseball Beats Beacons, 10-6

WORCESTER, MASS. 3/24/09 - The Clark University baseball team collected 14 hits en route to a 10-6 non-conference victory over UMass-Boston at Granger Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Clark raised its record to 7-10 overall, while UMB fell to 2-11.

Sophomore Kevin Kopec (Katonah, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Cougars. Junior Phil DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.), sophomore Peter Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) and freshman Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) each collected two hits in the game.

The Beacons were led by sophomores Tim Fontaine (Worcester, Mass.) and Dan Noonan (Westport, Mass.) with two hits and an RBI apiece.

UMB erased a 7-5 deficit to trail by one run when Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.) laced a double to left field to score Ryan Oshima (LaJolla, Calif.), who reached on a walk, in the top of the eighth.

Clark scored some insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. The Cougars got two runners on with back-to-back walks to set the table for Kopecs one-out RBI single up the middle. Junior Steve DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) tripled to right field to score two runners and increase Clark's lead to 10-6.

Senior Dave Gagnon (Harwich, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the victory.

Trailing 2-0, Clark cut the deficit in half when Kopec laced an RBI single to centerfield to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the first. The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the second on a two-run triple by Lewis and a sacrifice RBI by Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) to lead 4-2.

Clark added another run in the third, before UMB came back with a pair of runs in the fourth to pull within one (5-4). The teams traded single runs in the seventh inning before Clark's three-run eighth put the game away.

Freshman Nick Winchell (Scituate, R.I.) earned the victory on the mound. He allowed five hits, four runs (three earned), while striking out three.

Sophomore Andrew LeBrun (Stoneham, Mass.) took the loss for UMB.

Clark will face Framingham State College on Thursday (3 p.m.).
