Baseball Wraps-Up Spring Week with Split Against Northland
WINTER HAVEN, FLA. 3/6/09 - The Clark University baseball team wrapped-up its spring week with a 4-8 record after splitting with Northland College (Wis.) on Friday afternoon. Clark was edged in the opener, 9-8, and won the nightcap in a 15-2 rout.
The Cougars took the lead in the fifth inning on a wild pitch, Peter Lewis's (Gardiner, Maine) RBI single and a passed ball for an 8-7 advantage. Clark held Northland at bay until the sixth inning when Chris Steiner (Auburn, Wash.), who was facing the third Cougar pitcher of the frame, hit a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game at eight-all. The Lumberjacks then plated the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Freshman Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) was Clarks only multiple hitter, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Freshman James Wilson (Chatham, N.J.) took the loss in a 1/3 of an inning of work.
Clark, which pounded out 21 hits, scored runs in all but one inning en route to the 15-2 win in the nightcap. The Cougars batted around in the first inning to score nine runs to take a 9-1 lead and never looked back.
Catcher Joe Krahe (Fairfield, Conn.) led Clark with a 4-for-4 performance to go along with four RBI. Phil DiMarco (Belliingham, Mass.) collected three hits, while Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) had two hits and two RBI.
Senior Greg Long (Milford, Mass.) was the complete game-winner allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out five.
Clark returns to its northern slate against Norwich University on Tuesday, March 17 (3 p.m.).
