Softball Concludes Spring Week with a Split
CLERMONT, FLA. 03/05/09 - The Clark University softball team concluded its spring week trip by splitting a pair of games in Clermont, Fla. After falling to Moravian College, 7-1, the Cougars posted a 1-0 victory over Elizabethtown College (N.J.).
In the opener, junior Darcy Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) brought home the lone run with a triple to right field. She went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double to lead Clark. Junior Chelsea Proulx (Franklin, N.H.) also had two hits in the game.
Junior Melissa Traft (Milton, Mass.) (0-5) took the loss for Clark, which committed four errors in the contest. She surrendered seven runs (one earned) on 13 hits while fanning one and walking three.
Locked in a pitcher's duel in game two, Clark finally broke through in the fifth inning. Freshman Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.) laced a two-out double to centerfield to score Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.), who reached on a hit to left, for the game-winning run.
Coakley went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead Clark (2-8) to the victory. Sophomore Kate Tutela (Dalton, Mass.) also collected a pair of hits in the win.
Sophomore Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) allowed just seven hits and struck out five to improve to 2-3 on the mound.
Clark returns for its northern slate with a doubleheader at Bridgewater State College on Tues., March 17 (3 p.m.).
