WORCESTER, MASS. 1/23/09 - Sophomore Liz Rosen (North Attleboro, Mass.) broke her own meet record, setting a new meet mark in the 1,650-yard freestyle to lead Clark University to second place after the first day of competition at the Worcester City Championships at Holy Cross on Friday evening.

Clark tallied 139 points for the day to trail first place Holy Cross (172) by 33. WPI is in third with 76 points, while Assumption College is in fourth with 44 points.

After setting the meet record (18:18.22) in the event last year, Rosen, who won the race, eclipsed that mark by a mere .13 in a time of 18:18.09 this go-round.

Other individual winners included, first-time championship participant Eileen Garcia (New York, N.Y.). Garcia earned 253.10 points on the 1-meter diving board for a first place finish.

Senior Lindsey Stone (Avon, Conn.) and sophomore Britney Wigley (Newport Beach, Cali.) each added points to the board with their fourth place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.77) and 1,650-freestyle (19:29.54), respectively.

The Clark men will enter tomorrow's day of events in third place with 98 points. Both Holy Cross and WPI are tied for the lead with 109 points apiece.

Ryan Garr, Cooper Hart, Dan Howard and Drew Jackson combined for a victory in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:45.23, placing third on Clark's all-time top-five list.

Individually, Jackson took second in the 200-yard IM (2:07.03), followed by Hart in fourth (2:08.65).

In diving, Sal Pezzella (South Windsor, Conn.) was third on the 3-meter board (214.95).

Competition will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m.
