Swim & Dive Suffers First Loss of Season; Lagasse Sets New Clark Mark
WORCESTER, MASS. 1/10/09 - Clark University's swimming and diving teams suffered their first loss of the season in a dual-meet against Brandeis University at the Kneller Athletic Center pool on Wednesday night. The Cougar women (5-1) fell to the Judges, 129-114, while the Clark men (4-1) were defeated, 133-104.
Brandeis women improved to 5-3 overall and the men evened its record at 4-4.
There were several standout performances on the women's side. Kayleigh Lagasse (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished the meet with a new school record in the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.89). The senior captain placed second in the event, breaking the previous mark (2:17.94) set by Jocelyn Maynard '95.
Sophomore Liz Rosen (North Attleboro, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:53.88 and freshman Eileen Garcia (New York, N.Y.) took first in both the 1-meter (241.25) and 3-meter (218.25) diving events to pace Clark.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Dana Akerfelds (Bronxville, N.Y.), Britney Wigley (Newport Beach, Cali.), Lindsey Stone (Avon, Conn.) and Erin Smith (Carrollton, Tx.) also won in a time of 3:55.24.
Freshman Ryan Garr (Kingston, R.I.) was the only winner for the Clark men. He placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.83).
Clark will compete in the Worcester City Championships this weekend at Holy Cross. Friday's competition will begin at 6 p.m.
