Women's Basketball Falls to Trinity, 70-49

Hartford, Conn.  Junior co-captain guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds and sophomore center Molly McGlynn (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) notched 15 points and a game-high 14 boards to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 70-49 win over the visiting Clark University Cougars in womens basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity, off to its best start since the 1999-00 season, improves to 7-0, while the Cougars drop to 3-3 with their second loss in a row.

Trinity trailed, 17-12, midway through the first half, McGlynn scored six unanswered points to give the Bantams an 18-17 lead at the eight-minute mark. Trinity led, 34-30, with two minutes left in the first half, after a pair of free throws by Arnstein, but Clark freshman forward Ivori Aiken (Harlem, N.Y.) tallied the final four points before the break for a 34-34 tie. Trinity made just one of 10 shots from long range and half of its 10 free throws in the opening stanza, but 12 points by Arnstein and 10 by McGlynn carried the Bantam offense. Clark shot a respectable 42.8 percent from the field and held a 24-21 rebounding edge at the half, but 10 offensive boards helped the Bantams hoist 42 shots in the half compared to 28 for the Cougars.

The game remained tied for the first six minutes of the second half, before the Bantams used a 21-2 run over a seven-minute span to turn a 42-40 deficit into a 61-44 lead with six minutes left in the second half. Arnstein scored 11 of her 16 second-half points during the spurt. Trinity shot 53.6 percent from the field (15-28) in the second half and the Cougars shot 20.7 percent (6-29), including 1-for-11 from three-point range after the break. Trinity also outboarded the visitors, 27-17, in the second stanza, while both teams shot woefully from the charity stripe in both halves with a combined 21 free throws in 45 attempts in the game.

Trinity freshman guard Michelle Royals (Torrington, Conn.) came off the bench to join Arnstein and McGlynn in double figures in scoring with 10 points and added four rebounds, while junior guard Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.) contributed five boards and five assists, and classmate Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.) had five assists and two blocked shots. Senior co-captain Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Maine) paced Clark with 14 points and added four rebounds and three steals, while Aiken notched 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and senior co-captain guard Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine) dished out a game-high six assists.
