Roderigue Nets 1,000th Career Point in Women's Basketball Win

WORCESTER, MASS. 12/02/08 - Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Me.) scored 18 points, including her 1,000th career point and Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) and Kate Minister (Manchester, UK) each collected double-doubles with 17 points and 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively, to lead Clark University to a 70-58 non-conference victory over Connecticut College in women's basketball action on Tuesday night.

Opening at home, Clark (3-1) picked up its first victory at the Kneller Athletic Center, while Conn. College (0-5) suffered its fifth straight loss.

The Cougars started slow, as they found themselves quickly down by nine (13-4) on a jumper by Emily Cummings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in the early minutes of the game.

Using an 11-2 run, Clark clawed back into the game and tied the score at 15 highlighted by three straight points from Camilleri. The hosts would go on to build an 11-point lead and take a 39-28 half-time advantage.

Camilleri scored 15 first-half points for Clark.

Both teams were sluggish out of the locker rooms until Clark found its footing, building a commanding 18-point lead (50-32) on a pair of free throws by Katelyn Petty (Worcester, Mass.) seven minutes into the second half.

While Clark held a substantial advantage, the anticipation of Roderigue's 1,000th point remained. That milestone moment came with just 1:59 left in the game when she sank two free throws to become the 16th Clark women's basketball player to reach the landmark.

The Camels made one final run at the Cougars trimming the deficit to eight (54-62) on six straight points from Jennifer Shinall (Redding Ridge, Conn.), but would get no closer.

The difference of the game was at the charity stripe. Clark converted on 19-of-28 trips to the line, while Connecticut was only 5-for-11.

Clark's Minister was sharp from beyond the arc, shooting 5-for-8 from three point territory.

Shinall and Cummings led the Camels with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Kim Horne (West Lebanon, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday. Clark will host Fitchburg State College at (5 pm), while Connecticut will play Rhode Island College at 7pm.

Due to limited home meets, the 2008 cross country seniors were recognized at halftime of tonight's contest. Seniors Caleb Evanter, Lee Stone and graduate student Cory Leonard, as well as Andrea DeRocco, Kaitlyn Sephton and Amanda Haimes were all honored for their contribution to the program. The 2007 women's cross country team were also given the first-ever Clark varsity team academic excellence award for the highest cumulative gpa the previous year.
