Women's Basketball Falls to Johnson & Wales 66-54
The Johnson & Wales University womens basketball team posted a 66-54 victory against Clark in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.
Leading the way for Johnson & Wales was senior Alyse Ragaglia (West Newbury, Mass.) with 19 points, including five three pointers. Junior Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) had a double-double for the Wildcats, scoring 13 points with a game-high 17 rebounds while senior Johanna Santosuosso (Salem, Calif.) added 15 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory.
Junior Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) paced Clark with 15 points and eight rebounds while freshman Ivori Aiken (Harlem, N.Y.) added 13 points and four rebounds in the setback.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and held an 11-3 advantage after a three-pointer by Ragaglia with 16:47 on the clock. Clark responded with an 8-0 run and knotted the game at 11-11 on a three-pointer by Minister with 16:01 left in the first half. The two teams traded leads three times during the early stages of the first half with the game tied 19-19 with 8:03 remaining. The host Wildcats went ahead 24-23 on a three-pointer by Ragaglia with 3:04 left and took the 31-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. JWU had a 27-22 advantage in rebounds and forced 11 Clark turnovers in the first half.
JWU took their largest lead when a layup by Santosuosso put the team ahead 47-38 with 9:56 remaining in the game. The Wildcats had the 53-39 advantage after a pair of free throws by Ramirez with 6:44 on the clock. Clark would cut the lead to just eight points when a free throw by Camilleri made the score 56-48 with 2:30 remaining in the contest. That would be as close as the Cougars would get, however as JWU held on for the victory after hitting seven free throws in the final two minutes of play.
Johnson & Wales improves to 3-2 with the win while Clark falls to 2-1. The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, November 30th when they host WPI in a non-conference game at 2:00 p.m. Clark will host Connecticut College on Tuesday, December 2 at 7 pm.
