King Lifts Women's Soccer Past Coast Guard, 1-0
WORCESTER MASS. 9/27/08 - Junior Lauren King's (Piscataway, N.J.) first goal of the year came with just 2:38 left in the regulation to lift Clark University to a 1-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Coast Guard Academy in women's soccer action on Saturday evening at Granger Field.
Clark upped its record to 4-4 and 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while Coast Guard fell to 3-4 and 0-1 in league play.
King's game-winner came on a pass from teammate Julia Rizzo (Westboro, Mass.). The senior defender bent an indirect kick towards the box, where King headed it past the outstretched arms of Bear keeper Mary Mills (Amherst, N.H.) for the game-winning goal
The game was evenly matched in the first half, with Clark edging the Bears, 4-3, in shots.
The Cougars had the better of the play in the second half, outshooting the visitors 9-3, but could not convert.
Junior Joanna Clark (Windham, Me.) made three saves to notch her fourth shutout of the year. Mills turned aside six shots in goal for Coast Guard.
Clark will travel to WPI next Saturday (10 a.m.). Coast Guard will travel to Albertus Magnus for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
