Connecticut College Slips Past Women's Soccer
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior forward Sharon Katz (Barrington, R.I.) scored a pair of second half goals 4:54 apart to lift Connecticut College (1-0) to a 3-2 victory against Clark University (2-2) in women's soccer action played on Tempel Green Saturday afternoon. Katelynn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in with a goal in her collegiate debut and Jenna Ross (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the victory in goal, stopping eight Cougar shots in net for the Camels.
Molly Meehan (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Kristen Murrone (Middletown, Conn.) accounted for the Cougars' scores. Charlotte Bowman (Peterborough, N.H.) had two assists for the visitors.
After a scoreless first half of play, Driscoll put the Camels on the board 1:13 into the second stanza with her first collegiate tally. Midway through the half, the Cougars erupted for two scores in a span of 2:55 to take a 2-1 lead. Bowman set up the equalizer with her corner kick. Lauren King (Piscataway, N.J.) played the ball over to Meehan, who finished with the one-timer. With 21:30 to play, Murrone put in a cross from Bowman and Clark enjoyed a 2-1 advantage.
Undeterred, the Camels collected themselves and responded in their 2008 debut. With 11:38 to play, Katz was able to steal an outlet pass and score to even the game at two. Sophia Brand (Storrs, Conn.) set up the game-winner with a centering pass for Katz, who chipped one in with 6:44 in regulation.
Ross kept the Cougars off the board for the balance of the afternoon and the Camels were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Junior Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) finished with eight saves for Clark.
Clark will travel to Trinity College on Wednesday (4 pm).
