Men's Soccer Holds Off Colby-Sawyer, 1-0; Doenmez Nets Game-Winner

WORCESTER, MASS. 09/10/08 - Sophomore Baran Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) notched the game-winner and the Clark University men's soccer team held off a late second half charge by Colby-Sawyer to post a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Chargers on Wednesday night at Granger Field.

Ranked 10th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, Clark (4-0-1) earns its fourth straight win. Colby-Sawyer falls to 0-3 overall.

Doenmez scored the lone goal of the game in the 51st minute. Senior Mike Trobagis' (Acton, Mass.) initial shot just inside the 18-yard box bounced off the hands of Charger goalie Chris Feltes', but Doenmez fired the rebound to the far corner of the net for his team-leading sixth marker of the year.

Just nine minutes later, Clark had a chance to extend its lead after Jeremy Radovsky (South San Francisco, Cali.) was taken down in the box. However, Feltes made a diving save on Doenmez's penalty kick.

Colby-Sawyer turned up the pressure in the last 15 minutes of the game. Freshman Kevin Coyle's (Bradford, N.H.) bid rolled wide of the right post and a pair of drives by Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) was stopped at close range by Clark keeper Peter Wise (Providence, R.I.) to secure his second shutout of the season.

Both teams had strong scoring opportunities in a scoreless first half. The Cougars, who outshot the visitors, 6-3, in the frame, best chance came just under five minutes into the game when Adrian Blackadar's (Warwick, R.I.) header off a corner kick sailed just over the crossbar.

Wise smothered a shot by senior Colin Bellavance (Dudley, Mass.) in the 14th minute.

Clark held a 12-10 shot advantage for the game, and a 12-1 margin on corner kicks.

Both goalies finished with six saves in the game.

Clark will host Salem State College in a non-conference game on Saturday (1 p.m.). Colby-Sawyer will travel to Anna Maria College that same day (1 p.m.).
