Men's Soccer Blanks Johnson & Wales, 7-0
WORCESTER, MASS. 09/03/08 - The Clark University men's soccer team scored four first half goals en route to a 7-0 non-conference shutout victory over Johnson and Wales University at Granger Field on Wednesday night.
Senior Mike Trobagis (Acton, Mass.) notched a hat-trick to lead Clark. Sophomores Baran Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) and Greg Jancarik (Swansea, Mass.), and junior Preben Gietz (Waterloo, Belgium), and senior Jenner Alpern (Towson, Md.) each tallied single goals in the victory.
Clark (2-0-1) scored back-to-back goals for an early 2-0 advantage. Trobagis netted his first goal of the day after he beat Wildcats' keeper Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) in front of the net in the 16th minute. Just 1:01 later, Doenmez took a pass from Trobagis on the left side and fired it into the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. It was his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Cougars extended their lead (3-0) in the 28th minute when sophomore Kyle Klapp (Schenectady, N.Y.) corralled a loose ball and sent a back-peddled pass to Gietz, who then knocked it home for his first goal of the season.
The home team continued its attack with another goal before the break. Trobagis stuffed a pass from junior Jeremy Radovsky (South San Francisco) in the lower left corner of the net in the 31st minute for a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Johnson and Wales (0-3) had a chance to get on the board, but Eric Flaths (Warwick, R.I.) shot was stopped at close range by Clark goalie Baran Cansever (Southboro, Mass.) in the 65th minute.
Clark posted advantages of 17-7 in shots and 7-5 on corner kicks.
Senior Peter Wise (Providence, R.I.) was untested in goal in the first half, before giving way to Cansever (2 saves).
Ferraro (4 saves) and Michael Gentile (Holden, Mass.) (1 save) also split time in goal for the Wildcats.
Clark will travel to Brandeis University on Saturday (1 p.m.).
