Men's Swimming & Diving Fall to Coast Guard Academy
NEW LONDON, CONN. 02/02/08 - Both Clark University mens and womens swimming and diving teams fell to the United States Coast Guard Academy in dual meets held in New London, Conn., on Saturday afternoon. The Clark men (3-7) lost to Coast Guard by a score of 169-87, while the womens team (4-7) was defeated by the Bears, 172-121.
Clark had four first place finishes on the womens side. Sophomore Corri Stewart (Avon, Conn.) captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.88), junior Kayleigh Lagasse (Pawtucket, R.I.) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.31), first-year Elizabeth Rosen (North Attleboro, Mass.) topped the field in the 200-yard individual medley, and junior Jess Baker (Queensbury, N.Y.) earned her first victory of the season on the 3-meter diving board with 198.53 points.
Stewart and Lagasse also scored points in the 200-yard back (2:26.91) and 100-yard fly (1:05.94), respectively, while Baker took third on the 1-meter board (170.25).
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stewart, Laura Banulski (Bristol, Conn.), Katie MacDowell (Littleton, Mass.) and Lindsey Stone (Avon, Conn.) placed second with a time of 1:49.75.
The Clark men did not fare as well, however, against the defending NEWMAC champions. Drew Jackson (Chestertown, Md.) was the Cougars highest individual finisher with second place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.26). The junior swimmer also took third in the 100-backstroke (58.26) and joined teammates Taylor Morono (New London, N.H.), Brian Walsh (Wenham, Mass.) and Mike Smith (Milford, Conn.) for second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.09). First-year Dan Howard (Bow, N.H.) also had a solid performance with his third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.37).
Both Clark teams will host WPI in its regular season finale on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
