Swim & Dive Finish Second & Third at Worcester City Meet
WORCESTER, MASS. 1/26/08 - After two days of competition, the Clark University women's and men's swim and dive team finished second and third, respectively, at the Worcester City Championships held at Holy Cross.
Holy Cross captured both the women's and men's titles.
The Cougar women secured second place (456 points) for the third straight year, while WPI (301 points) and Assumption (161 points), a newcomer in the championships, finished third and fourth, respectively.
A pair of Clark first-timers swam away with new meet records this weekend. First-year Elizabeth Rosen (North Attleboro, Mass.), who won two events en route to a swimmer of the meet runner-up nod, took first in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a new meet time of 18:18.22, shattering last years record of 18:56.32 set by Maddie Alanis of Holy Cross. Rosens 1,000-yard split (11:01.94) in the race was the second fastest time in school history. Teammate Britney Wigley (Newport Beach, Cali.) also set a new mark with her second place performance in the 1,650 (18:54.63).
The duo teamed up again to finish one-two in the 500-yard freestyle. Wigley broke the meet record with her time of 5:24.16, while Rosen touched the wall just seconds later at 5:29.13.
Rosen's final victory came in the 400-yard individual medley (4:58.66) and junior Kayleigh Lagasse (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.96).
Junior Jess Baker (Queesnbury, N.Y.) was third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
On the men's side, WPI took second with 358 points, while Clark placed third with 228.
Junior Drew Jackson (Chestertown, Md.) led the way by swimming to a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.30), second in the 100-yard back (58.46), and third in the 200-IM (2:08.45). Rookie Dan Howard (Bow, N.H.) was second in the 200-back (2:10.31).
Both Clark teams will swim in a dual-meet against Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., next Saturday (2 p.m.).
