Deb Cormier ‘89

A three-sport athlete, Cormier played 11 varsity seasons of soccer, softball and basketball at Clark. In soccer she was an All-New England selection as a sophomore, junior, and senior. In 1987, as a junior she earned All-America honors and was named a Northeast Regional All-Star as a senior. In 1986, Cormier led the Cougars to their first-ever ECAC Tournament appearance as the team earned a 14-4-2 mark. A proficient scorer on the soccer field, Cormier holds the records for career points (90), career goals (40), season points (54 in 1986) and season goals (25 in 1986). On the basketball court, Cormier was a four-year player and a team captain her senior year. As a guard, she helped lead the Cougars to the ECAC New England Championship and a perfect 26-0 regular season in 1989 when Clark won the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. In 1989, she was also selected to the ECAC All-New England First Team and the New England Women’s Basketball Association All-Star Third Team.

In softball Cormier was a four-year player at shortstop. She helped lead the Cougars to the 1989 ECAC North Championship. Cormier was a recipient of the M. Hazel Hughes Trophy given to the outstanding senior female athlete of her class. She is a math teacher at Messalonskee High School in Oakland, ME. Cormier is also ther varsity girls’ soccer coach and assistant softball coach at Messalonskee High School, and she is an assistant basketball coach at Colby College.

Ray Fleming ‘38

Fleming played basketball for three years and baseball for four in his Clark tenure. In basketball, he captained the team his senior year, and he was considered to be a great all-around athlete.

A pitcher and slick fielding first baseman on the baseball team, he was a team captain as a senior in 1938. Fleming’s career .990 fielding percentage in among the highest in Clark’s 67 year history as he committed only two errors in 217 total chances. Fleming also finished his career with a .323 career batting average, which included 46 total hits, 10 doubles, four triples, one home run, and 23 runs batted in.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Fleming served as the junior class vice president and as vice president of the Gryphon Senior Honor Society. After his graduation from Clark, he played semi-professional baseball for the Norton Company. He later served as a Clark Alumni Council member from 1959-61 and was the Alumni Association Vice President from 1963-63 and President in 1964-65. Fleming died in 1983.

Christine Reed ‘85

Reed was a three-sport athlete who excelled in field hockey, basketball, and softball. She was the first woman to play twelve varsity seasons at Clark. In field hockey, she captained the team as a senior and was the team’s leading scorer in 1983. Reed was selected to the Northeast Regional All-Star team in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and was also and All-New England selection in 1984 and 1985.

Reed was part of Clark’s basketball team that played its way to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 1982 and 1983. On the softball diamond, Reed was also a team captain her senior year. In all, she played in more than 200 athletic contests, earning a 137-86-11 overall record in three sports. As a senior, she was the recipient of the M. Hazel Hughes Trophy, presented to the outstanding senior female athlete.

Following her graduation from Clark, Reed went on to serve as assistant basketball coach at Worcester State College, and she returned to Clark to assist with coaching the softball squad as well as field hockey from 1987-89. Reed is currently a buyer for the International Purchasing Department at Morgan Construction Company.

George Vasil ‘51

An outstanding basketball player, Vasil was a four-year starter who played in every one of his career games. While and undergraduate, he broke Clark’s all-time scoring record with more than 700 career points. Considered by other coaches and the Boston Globe (February 1951) to be one of the best small college players in New England, Vasil was twice selected tothe Worcester Telegram and Gazette All-City Basketball Team.

Following his graduation from Clark, Vasil went on to play semi-professional basketball. He was a school teacher in Massachusetts for 28 years and earned the honor of Teacher of the Year in 1981. Vasil also coached boys’ and girls’ basketball locally at Sutton and Marlboro High Schools for 18 years. For the past eight years, Vasil has been on the faculty and has served as the intramural director at St. Augustine High School in San Diego, CA.
