Men's Cross Country Recap

The up-and-coming men’s cross country squad made significant strides this season. Relying on just two seniors for leadership, the Cougars improved their standing within the conference with a sixth place finish (174 points) – one position higher than last year – and three top-five team performances. Included in that huddle is a second place showing at the Roger Williams Invitational (RWU), and third at the Western New England College (WNEC) and Community College of Rhode Island Invitationals (CCRI), respectively. Although Clark placed fourth at the Worcester City Championships for the second straight season, they upped their point total by 12 points this fall.

Senior Thomas McCarthy, who topped the team with five first place finishes, paced Clark in a pair of those meets finishing eighth (27:27) at CCRI and ninth (28:36) at WNEC. Additionally, he was the first Cougar to cross the finish line with his 39th place performance (28:03.40) at the NEWMAC meet. Junior Caleb Evanter also picked up a couple of team victories with a 27th place showing (29:34.10) at the Smith Invitational and his time of 29:16 at Roger Williams. Both McCarthy and Evanter represented Clark at the NCAA Division III Regional Cross Country Championships, placing 133rd (27:07.08) and 186th (28:21.5), respectively.

Not only were they performers on the course, but Clark cross country achieved in the classroom as well. McCarthy, Evanter and Lee Stone ‘09 were named to the NEWMAC All-Academic squad.

Women's Cross Country Recap

The 2007 women’s cross country team experienced one of its most successful campaigns in recent years. They captured three team titles for the first time since 1999, including just their second Worcester City Championship in 12 years, coupled with the Community College of Rhode Island (1st/4) and Western New England College (1st/12) Invitationals. The Cougars also improved its performance at the NEWMAC Championships with their eighth place showing – one spot higher than the previous season.

Graduate student Emily Tremaine led the Cougar pack this season. She claimed the Worcester City individual title and set a new course record at CCRI in a time of 19:36. Tremaine also earned her first-ever All-Conference honor after finishing sixth at the NEWMAC Championships this fall.

Tremaine, along with seniors Jenna Glazer, Ellen Durand and Keri Powers, junior Kaitlyn Sephton, and sophomores Mary Martin and Emma Siemasko concluded their season at the NCAA Division III Regional Cross Country Championships. The women raced to a 24th place finish in the 47-team field.

Tremaine, Sephton, Martin, Siemasko and junior Kimberly Choate were all named to the NEWMAC All-Academic squad

Field Hockey Recap

Considering the tough schedule the Clark field hockey team faced this season, they pulled through with a staggeringly improved record of 7-10 (2-6 NEWMAC). Not only were the Cougars matched up against nationally ranked Williams College, but they also faced four out of five regionally ranked teams in their conference. Season highlights included an early win over NCAA Tournament contender New England College (5-4) and a string of scattered victories over non-conference teams that include Becker (4-1), Regis (11-0), Wheelock (7-1), and Anna Maria (5-0). Clark also posted consecutive conference wins over MIT (3-2 OT) and Smith (2-1) to conclude the regular season. After being shutout of the NEWMAC tournament last year, the Cougars returned to the postseason stage as the sixth seed. Their season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to third-seeded Wheaton College.

As a team, the Cougars set new marks in three categories this fall, including game points (28), game goals (11), and game assists (7). Clark also performed on the defensive side of the field, where first-year goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey ’10 finished first overall in the conference in saves per game. Not to mention, the team topped the NEWMAC in total saves with 173. Named to NFHCA All-Region and NEWMAC All-Star teams, sophomore Lauren Blake (17-8-42), who placed among the top-10 in the league in every offensive category this year, capped her season ranked 10th and 11th, respectively, in points per game (2.47) and goals per game (1.00) in Division III. Teammate Carley Corkum joined Blake on the All-Conference second team. It was their second all-conference nod.

Men's Soccer Recap

Although injuries left head coach David Kulik with a depleted roster this season, the Clark University men’s soccer team proved they were still a team to contend. Finishing the fall with a 7-5-6 (3-2-1 NEWMAC) mark, the Cougars not only posted their first-ever win over Wheaton College (1-0), but also battled their way through eight overtime games – six of which ended in a draw – setting a new mark for ties in a season (6). A stingy defensive team, Clark shutout five opponents and allowed just four goals in league play (three against Babson College in a second-half man-down situation) en route to its second NEWMAC Tournament semifinal appearance in three years. The fourth-seeded Cougars came out on top in a 2-1 victory over MIT in the first round, but failed to repeat against Wheaton losing 2-0 in the semifinals.

Although the team’s season ended premature of their goal, a few individual successes sparked Clark’s 2007 campaign. With an assist in the win over Wheaton, captain David Blum ‘08 broke the 35-year old career points record set by Ted Satiropoulos ’72 (40-6-86). The senior forward amassed 38 goals, 11 assists for 87 career points to become Clark’s all-time points leader. After two seasons on the D.L., midfielder Marc Labbe ‘08 capped his career with a team-leading 10 goals for 20 points and a first-team All-Conference nod. Lino Goncalves ’08, a defender, joined Labbe on the NEWMAC first-team, while goalkeeper Peter Wise ’09 was named to the second-team.

Women's Soccer Recap

The 2007 Clark women’s soccer team faced a net full of stiff competition this season, including five NCAA tournament teams and a pair of ECAC finalists, to finish with a 7-8-3 (4-5 NEWMAC) mark. With a relatively young starting line-up, not to mention a first year collegiate goalkeeper, the Cougars proved to be a defensive minded squad that combined for four shutouts and finished third in goals allowed (1.06) and goals against average (1.02) in overall games played in the NEWMAC.

Clark demonstrated it could play with the regions best after limiting Western Connecticut State University, an NCAA Final Four participant, and two second round contenders in Springfield College and Wheaton College to just one goal in 1-0 losses. The Cougars also battled to 1-1 draws against Brandeis University and Keene State College, the ECAC Champion and runner-up, respectively. After playing Connecticut College for the first time since 1998, Clark added to its list of accomplishments with a 1-0 shutout victory over its NESCAC foe.

The Cougars capped their autumn by earning its fourth straight NEWMAC Tournament berth, where as the sixth-seed they fell short of advancing with a 4-3 penalty kick loss to third-seed Babson College. It was the second time in four years Clark’s tournament hopes were dashed in PK’s.

It was only fitting that a pair of defenders were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference teams. Joanna Clark ’10, a first-year goalkeeper, finished second in the league in goals against average (1.00) and save percentage (.816) and third in shutouts (4) en route to her second-team selection. In addition to Clark, Julia Rizzo ’09 was also named to the All-NEWMAC second team.

Women's Tennis Recap

The Clark University women’s tennis team got off to a slow start this season. Not only did the Cougars have to contend with a challenging schedule, but they also had to incorporate 11 new faces into the line-up. After dropping the first five games of the season, the team finally picked up a win over Mitchell College (9-0). The Cougars went through a string of defeats before winning three of their last four matches to finish with a 4-11 (0-6 NEWMAC) mark.

Captain Kristen Domurad ‘08 led Clark with seven victories – five at number three singles. She claimed a win at number two singles versus Bay Path College (6-3, 6-0) and posted a pair of super tie-breaker set wins at number two and three, respectively, against Becker College (4-6, 6-3, 10-3) and Worcester State College (6-3, 7-6, 7-4) en route to a Cougar of the Week nod. Newcomer Freddie Palmer ’11 also had a solid season, picking up six wins – two at the top slot – in her collegiate debut. In doubles play, Domurad and teammate Phoebe Livingston ‘10 combined to post a team-high four victories.

Three Cougars received All-NEWMAC academic honors, including Ashley Faden ’08, Rebecca Good ’09 and Livingston.

Women's Volleyball Recap

In spite of a 6-18 (1-8 NEWMAC) record, the Clark University women’s volleyball team grew stronger as a unit throughout the 2007 campaign. First-year head coach Mickey Cahoon stepped in for his collegiate debut and helped change the level of play for the Cougar squad. Cahoon’s efforts were illuminated in Clark’s two of first three sweeps over Husson, 3-0 and Anna Maria, 3-0, mid-season shutouts over Mitchell College (3-0) and Newbury College (3-0), and a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Worcester State College (3-2). Clark hit a high note with their big win over Mt. Holyoke College (3-2), its lone NEWMAC win of the season, on Senior Night at the Kneller Athletic Center.

Individual highlights included sophomore Emily Visone’s new season record of 4.82 digs per game, breaking her previous mark of 4.35. Finishing sixth in the NEWMAC in digs (4.82), Visone, along with teammates Sarah Hunsucker ‘08 and Kylie Kutney ‘10 were ranked among the top-10 in the NEWMAC in kills (2.99) and aces (.70), respectively. Hunsucker, who also finished seventh in the league in points (3.78), was selected to play in the New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic match.

NEWMAC ANNOUNCES FALL HONORS

Men's Soccer
Three members of the Clark University men’s soccer team were named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-conference teams, it was announced on Wednesday. Lino Goncalves and Marc Labbe received first-team recognition, while Peter Wise earned second-team accolades.

A mainstay in Clark’s backfield, Goncalves is a three-time All-NEWMAC selection, earning his second first-team nod. The versatile senior from Newton, Mass., has been utilized on both ends of the field as he helped Clark top the conference in goals allowed (4) and shutouts (4), and chipped in offensively with two goals and two assists this season. He was also recognized for his solid defensive play with the defensive Most Valuable Player honor at the Western New England College Classic earlier this season.

Originally from Waterville, Me., Labbe finished as the team’s top scorer this season with a career-high 10 goals and 20 points. In regular season games, the senior midfielder finished second in goals and fourth in both goals per game (.56) and points (1.11) in the NEWMAC. Labbe, a two-year starter, scored a goal in five of Clark’s seven wins, including a three-goal game in a victory over Lasell College earlier this fall. He also earned NEWMAC Player of the Week and WNEC Classic All-Tournament team honors this season. This is his first All-Conference team appearance.

Wise, a native of Providence, R.I., was the lone goalkeeper on the All-Star second-team. During the regular season, the junior netminder led Clark to five shutouts, including four of six scoreless games in the NEWMAC. He surrendered just four goals in six conference games, where three came in a second-half man-down situation against Babson College earlier this season. He tops the conference in four statistical categories, including goals against average (.64), save percentage (.879), saves (4.83), and shutouts (.67) and ranks second overall in goals against average (.91), save percentage (.828), saves and saves per game (4.81). Wise was also named to the WNEC Classic All-Tournament team at the start of the year.

After claiming the most ties in school history, Clark (7-5-6, 3-2-1 NEWMAC) capped its year in the conference tournament semifinals.

Women's Soccer
A pair of Clark University women’s soccer players received All-Conference second team recognition, it was announced on Wednesday. Julia Rizzo and Joanna Clark are making their first appearance on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-star squad.

Rizzo, a junior defender, was the backbone of Clark’s defense this season. The Westboro, Mass., native split time as the team’s starting center back and right back, where she helped Clark finish third in the conference in goals allowed (1.06) and third in goals against average (1.02) during the regular-season.

A native of Windham, Me., Clark, a sophomore goalkeeper, shined in her first season with the Cougars. In the NEWMAC, she finished second in two statistical categories, including goals against average (1.00) and save percentage (.816), and tied for third in shutouts with two. Clark stopped a season-high 11 shots against Western Connecticut State University in the team’s season opener and ended the season with 92 saves – fifth best in the conference in overall statistics.

Clark advanced to the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year and concluded its season with a 7-8-3 overall record and 4-5 NEWMAC mark.

Field Hockey
Clark University’s Carley Corkum and Lauren Blake have been named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference field hockey second team, it was announced on Wednesday.

Corkum, originally from Newbury, Mass., earned her second nod on the NEWMAC All-Star squad. The sophomore defender anchored Clark’s defense from her center back position for the second consecutive season. Corkum, a two-year starter, was vital in converting defensive stops into offensive opportunities with her ability to clear the ball from the defensive zone. She also contributed offensively with two goals, including a game-winner, and an assist this season.

A native of Oakland, Me., Blake received her inaugural All-Conference selection this season. She topped the team in scoring from her forward position with 17 goals, eight assists and 42 points, just four points shy of the single season points record set by Laura Stuto ’93. In regular season play, Blake, a sophomore, finished first in points per game (2.47) and third in goals (1.00) in the NEWMAC and ranked in the top-15 nationally in points per game (11th) and goals per game (15th).

BLUM BREAKS RECORD IN FINE FASHION

The cliché, ‘records are made to be broken,’ certainly holds true for Clark University men’s soccer player David Blum ‘08. After four years on Granger Field, Blum can finally hang up his cleats as the Cougars all-time point leader with 38 goals, 11 assists for 87 career points. The four-year striker from Irvington Park, N.Y., notched the assist that broke the 35-year old mark set by Ted Satiropolus ‘72 and catapulted Clark to its first-ever win (1-0) over then nationally ranked Wheaton College.

Sketching his name in Clark annals was not an easy task, however. As the clock wound down on the 2007 campaign, Blum entered the final regular season home game just one point shy of the all-time points record. Tying the mark eight games into the season (38-10-86), the two-year captain had only 90 minutes to close his chapter on Clark soccer in front of the home crowd.

Blum and his teammates would have to overcome a few obstacles on that October rainy day. Not only did they have to battle the elements and the emotions of Senior Day, but they would also be up against their Achilles heel – Wheaton College, who had beaten Clark in 14 previous meetings.

“I always knew the longstanding record was attainable,” Blum says. “It wasn’t until senior introductions where I learned I had tied it.”

The two-time NEWMAC All-Star didn’t waste any time making history as he put his stamp on the record books just 6:34 into the game. He bent an indirect kick towards the goal, where teammate Preben Gietz ‘10 lunged and headed the ball into the far right corner of the net for the game-winner.

“Breaking the career points mark on Senior Day was a perfect culmination to all the hard work and effort I’ve put in over four years,” said Blum. “To beat a team our program has never beaten and break the record all in one kick, was by far the most amazing feeling in the world. It was and will always be the highlight of my career.”

Although Blum is happy to hold the coveted spot on Clark’s all-time points list, he understands records are made to be broken. One of his most cherished memories, he admits, will be the experience with his teammates. “As I look back on my four years at Clark, I will always think about the great times I’ve had with my teammates both on and off the field. It is because of them that I had the opportunity to break such a record. Without them, I would not have even come close.”

Blum ends his career as the all-time points leader (38-11-87) and single season record holder in goals (23) and points (50).

In regular season play, the Oakland, Me., native, finished first in points per game (2.47) and third in goals (1.00) in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and ranked in the top-15 nationally in points per game (11th) and goals per game (15th). SAAC TRICK OR TREATS FOR A CAUSE

The Clark University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) dressed up for a good cause on Halloween last Wednesday. In its third annual “Trick or Treat for Canned Goods” fundraiser, SAAC patrolled the neighborhoods surrounding Worcester State College and Assumption College for canned goodies.

SAAC community engagement co-chairs Julie Parnell ‘08 and Lauren Schiappa ’08 spearheaded the event. Prior to Halloween, Parnell, a softball player, and Schiappa, a member of the women’s rowing team, along with the help of six other committee members, alerted the targeted neighborhoods with the distribution of 400 flyers. Additionally, they spread the word through posters, campus and student digest announcements and word-of-mouth.

Their advertisements did not go unnoticed as 30 student-athletes, clad in Clark University apparel, collected 965 pounds of canned goods. Although the numbers were slightly less than last year’s 1,070 pound effort; for the student-athletes, it was a win-win situation. All proceeds were donated to the Worcester County Food Bank.
