Winners of five of its last six games, Clark (8-6, 3-0 NEWMAC) has posted its first 3-0 league start since the 2003-04 season. Not only did the Cougars beat Babson College (60-52) for the first time in their last three meetings, but they also knocked off the defending NEWMAC champs Coast Guard Academy (57-56) and Springfield College (66-64) on Wednesday. Clark will need strong performances from sophomore Mark Alexander (17.2 ppg), who was limited to just four points against Springfield, junior Peter Normandin (14.6 ppg, 8.4 rpg) and senior Pat Landers (13.4 ppg). Meanwhile, newcomers Jack Minister (8.6 ppg) and Chris Lopiano (6.3 ppg), both sophomore transfer students, have come on strong to complement the Cougars’ play.
WPI, which boasts an 11-4 (2-0 NEWMAC) record and 5-1 mark at home, had its five-game win streak snapped with an 83-74 non-conference loss to Trinity College on Tuesday. Forwards Antoine Coleman (15.8 ppg) and Jim Marois (14.3 ppg) lead the Engineers, an explosive offensive team with power around the perimeter, in scoring. Clark will have to contain the senior duo if it will have any chance at success. While WPI halted Clark’s unblemished conference record four years ago, the team is hopeful the outcome will be different this time around. A victory by the Cougars will give them sole possession of the top spot in the conference and their first 4-0 NEWMAC open since 2002. That year, they went 7-0 in the league before falling to Babson (90-79). Earlier on Saturday, the Cougar women will face WPI at 2 p.m. It will be the second time this season the two teams have faced each other. Clark defeated the Engineers, 57-47 in the championship game of the Worcester City Tournament.
The Cougars will have their hands full getting by WPI for a second time. Owners of a 6-7 (1-2 NEWMAC) record, the Crimson and Gray have won three of their last five. Clark (5-7, 1-1 NEWMAC) is led by junior Sarah Roderigue (16.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and sophomore Jillian Camilleri (14.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg), while WPI looks to Kaileen Selen (11.7 ppg) and Serena Dubois (9.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg).
