COUGAR WOMEN SWIM AND DIVE SET FOR NEWMAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Concluding the regular season with a 7-5 dual-meet mark, the Clark University women’s swim and dive team will make their way to Wellesley College for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship meet this weekend in Wellesley, Mass.

“We had a very successful dual-meet season,” said head coach Paul E. Phillips. “We’re over .500 for the second time in four years, so I think the program is moving in the right direction.”

“We focused our attention on the latter half of the season, and the team is giving me the indication that they feel good about the championships.”

Although the Cougars placed 10th at last year’s NEWMAC’s, packing on the points are not their only priority this time around. According to Phillips, every swimmer or diver should look to have one life-time best, see a school record broken, and have a relay team finish in Clark’s top-five all-time. “If everyone could accomplish at least one of those goals, that would be awesome,” he said. “Regardless of whether you score a point, everyone gets to contribute, and that brings energy back to the rest of the group.”

The Cougars will need strong performances from a troop that includes, sophomores Lindsey Stone (50 and 100-freestyle) and Kayleigh Lagasse, who finished just .55 seconds off the school mark in the 200-yard butterfly last year, and first-year Dana Akerfelds (100 and 200-backstroke).

Leading the team with 18 first-place finishes this winter, Akerfelds will get her first taste of college-style championships at Wellesley. “First-years don’t have any expectations,” said Phillips. “They just go for it.”

“Dana likes to compete, so I suspect she’ll do well this weekend.”

“Everyone on our roster has a chance to contribute,” Phillips added. I’m excited to see what our team can do.”

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ON A RUN

Tied for third in the NEWMAC, the Clark University women’s basketball team (12-10, 8-3 NEWMAC) has won their last seven conference games. It marks the first time the Cougars have won seven straight league contests since joining the NEWMAC (formerly the NEW-8) in the 1996-97 season, where they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars look to extend its conference winning streak to eight games when they face Springfield College on Thursday (5:30 p.m.). Springfield owns a 12-3 series advantage over Clark, after defeating the Cougars, 63-56, earlier this season. Clark has not beaten SC since the 2003-04 season, where they posted a 68-59 victory in the NEWMAC Championship game.
