Award established at Clark honors famed educator, battles illiteracy
The Nancy and Peter Kole—William Holmes McGuffey Award was recently established at Clark to support educational research addressing the problem of illiteracy in the United States. The award is funded by Mr. and Mrs. Peter C. Kole in honor of educator and philosopher William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), whose Peerless Pioneer Readers had a major and far-reaching impact on American education. The Kole-McGuffey Award will be given to a Clark graduate student who has completed outstanding research in a thesis, dissertation, or project that furthers the battle to improve literacy. The first is expected to be awarded in the 2006-07 academic year.

Kole is the founder and president of Paramount Metal Products, in Cleveland, Ohio. His wife, Nancy, is a former teacher and an alumna of Miami University. Kole is very active in Albanian affairs. He was the Midwest director of the New England Albanian Relief Organization and was instrumental in its effort to build an English-language library in his ancestral hometown of Pogradec, Albania. He is also a founding member of the Frosina Information Network, a leading source of information and services to the Albanian community. In 2004, the National Albanian American Council honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1996, Kole endowed a scholarship fund to aid Clark students of Albanian origin/descent. He is also an active alumnus with Idaho State University, endowing several scholarships there. In 1998, he was honored with ISU's Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Clark welcomes high school teachers for Clark-APA Workshop
From July 10-12, the American Psychological Association (APA) Education Directorate and Clark held the second-annual APA-Clark University Workshop for High School Teachers, sponsored by Clark 's Lee Gurel Fund and the American Psychological Foundation (APF). The APA Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) collaborated with Clark to develop this workshop, which included presentations by TOPSS members and Clark psychology professors. Twenty-five high school teachers from around the country participated.

During this three-day workshop, participants learned about recent updates from various fields within psychology. Additional sessions covered the history of psychology and involving high-school students in research. Participants received many ideas for activities to use in their classrooms. The current president of the APA, Dr. Gerald P. Koocher, also visited campus and gave a lecture on “Questionable Fads and Practices in 20th-Century Clinical Psychology” to workshop participants.

The idea for a workshop for high-school teachers grew from the vision and generosity of Clark alumnus Lee Gurel '48. Gurel went on to practice psychology and believes, not only in the importance of education in helping students achieve their goals, but also in the influence and inspiration teachers can have on their students.

"Psychology is central to our lives," explains Gurel. "And if taught at the secondary-school level, this subject can get at issues that are essential—and often neglected—in our culture."
