Fishman Library dedicated

The Graduate School of Management (GSOM) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a daylong series of festivities on Nov. 9. The events included a luncheon and dedication of the Fishman Library in the Stevenish Career Management Center in Carlson Hall, faculty and alumni panel discussions on a variety of business-related topics, and a dinner with a keynote address by Joe Nocera, award-winning New York Times business columnist.

The dedication of the Fishman Library was a highlight of the day. GSOM Advisory Council members, alumni, students, faculty and staff gathered in the Winton Atrium in Carlson Hall to celebrate the opening of the Fishman Library, which was established thanks to the generosity of Mark Fishman '82. Named in honor of the Fishman family, the Fishman Library was renovated and equipped with new computers, books, resources and furnishings. In addition, GSOM Career Services Director Lisa Radomsky has plans underway for new programming through the library and will produce a career handbook for GSOM students that will also carry the Fishman name.

GSOM student Krisztina Poda, a graduate assistant for the Fishman Library, said the renovations have already led to "a huge increase in the number of students who come to the library to do job searches, internship searches and to use the books and resources for research. " Poda thanked Fishman for "making all of this possible."

President John Bassett described Fishman as representing the best of Clark alumni.

"Mark Fishman is a great representative of the Clark community. He loves Clark deeply, and the Clark community loves him deeply, " Bassett said. "Mark has built a career and a life that exemplifies how a person can be a success in business and make a positive difference in his community.  Clark is proud of him." He added that the dedication of the Fishman Library "celebrates an important addition to GSOM and our Stevenish Career Management Center."

Robert Stevenish II '86, a GSOM Advisory Council member, longtime supporter of GSOM and good friend of Fishman, added his gratitude to Fishman for his contributions to GSOM and to his own life.

"Mark has done a lot for me and my career, more than he probably realizes," Stevenish said. "To know Mark Fishman is to love him, that's for sure."

In his remarks, Fishman recalled taking his first class at Clark with philosophy professor and now Dean of the College Walter Wright and the value of his Clark education.

"It's a remarkable thing when you realize that Clark does change lives," Fishman said. "The people at Clark taught me to think, they got mad at me when I didn't challenge conventional wisdom, and they got even more mad at me I didn't challenge authority."

Fishman spoke about his late father and the value he placed on education, always supporting loved ones in their quest for life-long learning.

"In our family, education creates opportunity," he said. "I'm proud to be able give something back to Clark, and I'm proud to be part of the Clark family."

Psychology professor Jaan Valsiner's Cultural Psychology of Urban Living class starts like many others at Clark. Singly and in small groups, students filter into the classroom and select seats around a long table. While exchanging greetings with classmates, they retrieve writing materials, water bottles and snacks from backpacks. Valsiner enters the classroom and the beginning of the three-hour class is spent fielding questions about assignments, reviewing the progress of student projects, and moderating discussion about the day 's topic.
