Clarknews

letter to alumni:

Dear Clark Alumni,

By the time this magazine is published, you will have already celebrated the holidays and welcomed the New Year. I hope your holidays were happy, and if you made any resolutions, that they continue to be active for you.

I made a resolution when elected Alumni Association president and that was to ensure that the voice of Clark alumni was heard and well represented and that more of you would get involved in the Clark Community. I have only six months left of my tenure as president, and while there is still much to be done, I am proud to tell you that action steps have been put into place to ensure that your voice is heard and that more of you are getting involved with Clark.

Our dedicated and loyal alumni volunteers who serve on the nominating committee recently pulled together a slate of potential candidates for election to  our Board of Trustees. This group made sure that your voice was heard, as it was the alumni who pulled the slate together for recommendations to the board. We received approval to move forward and hope now that you will do your part and vote. If you haven 't already, you will soon receive the Alumni Trustee ballot in the mail. Please take the time to vote for the candidate that you would like to see on the Board of Trustees.

On a separate note, I want to let you know that one of our friends has moved on to another university, Bentley in Waltham, Mass. Our previous alumni director, and most recently the director of the Clark Fund, Bill Bennett M.P.A. '97, has left Clark. After 18 years of loyalty, friendship and success, we are sorry to lose Bill to Bentley and wish him the best of luck. As the director of Alumni Affairs, Bill helped to advance the voice of the alumni, increase the number of programs and ensure alumni presence throughout the country and the world. Additionally, Bill proved to be a great fund raiser and Clark donor. He will be greatly missed.

If you haven't had the time or opportunity to get involved in the past, I encourage you to get involved now. Talk about Clark, join the Alumni Association, mentor a current student, and help support the University via the Clark Fund. Consider attending an upcoming event in your area. Clark faculty will join us on the road for various alumni events in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston, where they will highlight hot topics. I hope you are getting the various e-mails, invites and e-vites that Clark sends out on a regular basis. Please be sure to update your Clark profile so that we have your correct mailing and e-mail address.

I look forward to seeing many of you during Reunion 2008 in May. For more information about an upcoming event, reunion and other Clark news, check out our Web site at www.clarku.edu, call the Alumni Office, or e-mail me.

Sincerely,

Rich Caswell '89

Greetings from the Alumni and Parent Admissions program

Clark's counseling staff is in the thick of reading applications in preparation for the Admissions Committee meeting in March. Our early numbers suggest another increase in applications. The University 's efforts to communicate our message more clearly and broaden our outreach have contributed to this increased interest in Clark. Our APAP volunteers play a critical role in sharing our message by helping students understand the Clark experience and providing them with an additional perspective to consider in determining if Clark is a good match for them.

The newest way APAP volunteers spread the word about Clark is through our high school-liaison program. This program was created to develop, strengthen and personalize local connections between the University and high school guidance departments, prospective students and their parents. As adjunct members of the Admissions Office, our volunteers visit the high schools to which they have been assigned, deliver updated materials about the University and offer to make themselves available to speak with students or parents of students who are interested in Clark. This connection augments the relationship each high school already has with one of our staff members.

We are very excited about the potential of this program. Any alumni or parent volunteer with an interest in serving in this capacity can do so, which means we can fortify our presence in areas where Clark 's reputation is well established and extend our outreach to introduce Clark in areas where we are not as well known. During the inaugural year of the program, our volunteers visited 117 schools. This fall, our volunteers have been matched with 238 schools, a number that will increase this spring.

Clark's future will be shaped by students who become Clarkies. The more than 800 active APAP members make meaningful and invaluable contributions to shaping Clark's future by recruiting the type of students who will build on their or their child 's legacy. We are grateful for their efforts and invite other alumni and parents to join us in doing this very important work.

Warm regards,

Judy Earls
Director, Alumni and Parent Admissions Program
