Clark University - Clarknews winter 2007
Alumni news and notes (winter 2007)
Dear Clark Alumni,
Happy New Year to all of you!
It has been a very busy fall. It's hard to believe that we are now in the middle of the second half of the academic year.
In this issue, you will find your alumni trustee ballot. I want to encourage each and every one of you to take the time to vote for the next alumni-elected trustee. The alumni nominating committee considered many and came up with three great candidates. The committee was thrilled that all three were willing to be on the ballot. Now, I ask you to do your part and vote for the candidate you feel is most qualified to represent you and Clark alumni throughout the world. This is an important position on the board, and I hope you take the time to vote. Your vote matters!
This past fall we hosted our third Alumni-in-Residence program, in which 15 alumni returned to Clark to participate in classes, meet with students and share their experiences. Several of the most recent alumni visitors had not been on campus for 15 years and were excited to see all the changes at Clark. Many were especially impressed with Clark's continued commitment to the Worcester community. In addition, they were impressed by our students and their commitment to Clark. The Clark spirit lives on!
Our alumni regional events continue to be a huge success. We held one event at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., hosted by Joy Dunkerley M.A. '54. A variety of alumni attended this event (from the '50s to '06). In addition, our Boston Young Alumni event at the Boston Beer Works was a very popular choice with young alumni, as over 100 Clarkies attended.
The Alumni Affairs Office, under the leadership of Aixa Kidd, continues to grow and change. LaDona Lanphere has been promoted to associate director of alumni affairs. She is thrilled to be in this new position and has already moved into reunion mode. If you've had the opportunity to meet with LaDona at any regional event, then you know we are even more thrilled that she has taken on this position at Clark. Please watch for reunion mailings and mark the May 18-20 weekend on your calendar now.
As you might recall, the Admissions Office is very busy this time of year reviewing potential students. Read the article in this edition of Clarknews to understand more about Clark's admissions philosophy. You can get involved with helping us recruit new potential students (and future alumni) by joining APAP (Alumni and Parents Admissions Program). Over the past several years, I have personally enjoyed meeting four to five prospective students each year. It's a small commitment that makes a big difference, and we could really use your help.
Please check out the Web site for upcoming alumni events. Alumni Affairs will be in California, Florida and Seattle this winter and spring, and we hope those of you in these areas can make it out to reconnect with Clark and fellow alumni. New locations are always being added, so be sure to check the Web site every now and then.

News from the Alumni and Parent Admissions program
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." -- Mahatma Ghandi
Ghandi's words tell us that we must model the behaviors we wish to create in the world. Clark University, our faculty, students and alumni have been and continue to be recognized as agents of change. APAP volunteers are also agents of change. You support Clark's reputation of making a difference. And by communicating Clark's values to prospective students, you are helping us recruit the next generation of change agentsā¹innovative and enthusiastic students who are equally passionate about creating a better world.
In an article written for the APAP Newsletter, the Clarkie Plus, regarding how we build a class, Harold Wingood, associate provost and dean of admissions and financial aid, writes, "Our goal is to have the admissions and selection process reflect our core institutional values. We begin with the notion that Clark as an institution and our faculty and students have an obligation and a rare opportunity to make our world a better place."
Your participation in APAP is integral to the recruitment cycle. This fall, 131 of the 250 college fairs we attended were staffed by our alumni and parents; 127 APAP members served as high-school liaisons to 218 schools, and 22 of the 25 Clark on the Road information sessions were hosted by APAP members. These activities are critical to helping generate applications to Clark. Additionally, 16 members attended one of the two on-campus training sessions we hosted and 28 members took part in our online chats. As you read these words, our alumni members are busy completing the remainder of their alumni interviews and submitting their reports.
In evaluating applications, the admissions staff assesses a student's academic preparation and competence and looks for students who possess the personal qualities that are congruent with Clark values. For this reason, alumni interviews are an integral part of our recruiting process. The University's messages are communicated to applicants in a very personal and meaningful way and the reports provide us with objective information that can help assess whether or not the applicant is good match for the University.
As Dean Wingood noted in Clarkie Plus, "Ultimately we enroll a great class each year because there are a lot of people who work very hard and care deeply about which students enroll at Clark."
You are an amazing group of volunteers who make it possible for Clark to attract students who are bright and have a sense of obligation to make the world a better placeā¹students who will build on YOUR legacy!
Please know that your gifts of time and self are truly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Judy Earls
