Alumni news and notes (winter 2005)
Dear Clark Alumni,
I hope this letter finds you well after the holidays and enjoying a great start to the new year. After a bustling fall semester at Clark, we are now gearing up for another busy spring.
One of the highlights this fall was the first Alumni-in-Residence program (see story page 6). On Nov. 10 and 11, 21 alumni from various backgrounds were invited back to Clark to enrich the intellectual life of the University by teaching classes in their field of expertise, participating in career panels and meeting informally with students and faculty. I had the opportunity to have dinner with some of these very interesting people. It was wonderful to meet these members of our alumni community. The students especially enjoyed getting to know our alumni and were appreciative of the program. Thanks to all who came back. You made a tremendous difference at Clark.
I am also proud to announce this year's candidates for Alumni-elected Trustee: Seth Novatt '77, Jackalyne Pfannenstiel '69 and Larry Roshfeld '80. Clark's alumni network continues to be a major priority for the Board of Trustees. Alumni-elected trustees are the leaders in this effort, examining ways to keep our more than 29,000 alumni connected to each other and the University and to support our current students. Maintaining and improving these ties with our alumni is essential to achieving Clark's future goals.
I encourage you to read the candidates' statements online at www.clarku.edu/trusteeballot and vote for the candidate who you believe would best represent us on Clark's Board of Trustees. You can vote online or complete the postcard ballot in this issue of Clarknews and drop it in the mail. But remember, you can only vote once!
Soon, you will see new pages on our Alumni Online Community (www.clarku.edu/alumnicommunity) for event registrations, the Alumni Regional Communities and making donations to the University. We also want to make the most of our alumni Web pages, www.clarku.edu/alumni. Please let us know what you want to see on these pages, what works and what improvements could be made. In addition, we are looking for alumni who are interested in technology to help us in the development of our Web pages, specifically the pages for our Alumni Regional Communities. If you are interested, please e-mail me.
Your gift to the University—no matter how much—is always greatly appreciated. Your support helps the University in its efforts in the sciences, to attract and maintain diversity on campus and to continue to deliver a top-quality education with an outstanding faculty. If you haven't done so yet, please consider making a gift to the Clark Fund.
Finally, don't forget to mark those new calendars for Reunion—Alumni Weekend, May 20-22. Visit the Reunion Web site (www.clarku.edu/reunion) for the latest Reunion news. Even if this is not your Reunion year, consider coming back to see the people who may have been at Clark with you. I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Faith Linsky '76
Alumni Association President

While we review these and the hundreds of regular-decision applications that we are receiving on a weekly basis, I'd like to take this time to update you on the students who are in their first year at Clark.
Members of the Class of 2008, who come from 32 states and 25 countries, are making great contributions to campus life. Here is a glance at our admissions statistics for this class:
- 4,239 total applicants; 90 early-decision candidates.
- 2,649 admitted students; 528 enrolling students.
- Midrange for admitted-student SAT scores: 1100-1310.
- Average GPA for admitted students: 3.44.
- International students represent 8 percent of the enrolled class, the first increase in several years.
- ALANA (African descent, Latino, Asian and Native American) students make up 12 percent of the enrolled class: 3 percent African-American, 6 percent Asian, 3 percent Hispanic, 3 percent multiethnic, 68 percent Caucasian, and 17 percent other/not reported.
- 233 merit-based scholars enrolled.
- 283 students enrolled in the International Studies Stream.
- 31 percent of Clark's enrolling students were in the top 10 percent of their high-school class.
As we move forward, we remain committed to enrolling quality students who will take advantage of the opportunities to learn and grow in the Clark community. I extend special thanks to all of the Alumni Admissions Program members who helped us do just that with the Class of 2008. Six hundred members continue to assist us in recruiting the Class of 2009. Just this fall, alumni and staff were able to cover 229 college fairs in 29 states and 10 countries. There were 22 Clark on the Road: Information Sessions with 112 students and 27 alumni in attendance. Currently, we are working to offer alumni interviews to many of our applicants. This initiative began in November and will conclude in February.
I appreciate the time that you all take to share your Clark experiences with prospective students and families. I wish you all the best in the coming year.
