Clark University - Clark News Winter 2003
Alumni news and notes (winter 2003)
Dear Clark Alumni,
Winter is a wonderful time in New England and at Clark. Although the days are shorter and colder, it is a time for celebration and family reunions. I hope this letter finds you well after the holidays.
Clark had a successful Family Weekend in late September, with the largest attendance to date. More than 1,000 parents registered for the weekend, which included a “Parent-to-Parent Panel” with Clark parents sharing some of their wisdom, a great presentation by screen-studies Professor Timothy Shary and a picnic on the green where current students and their families enjoyed conversations with Alumni Association members.
At the Alumni Council’s September meeting, First Vice President Faith Linsky ’76 and I presented a proposal to restructure the governance of the Alumni Association into a more active, focused and representative organization. One of the goals in the strategic plan we passed two years ago was to review the governing structure of the association. We saw the need to develop an association that is more inclusive of alumni who live outside of New England but who are still very active in the life of the University as volunteers in admissions, career services, mentoring, networking, fundraising, reunion activities and student activities on campus. View our full proposal on the alumni Web pages and send us your comments and suggestions.
While you are visiting our Web pages, don’t forget to register for the Alumni Online Community, www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/CLK/. Alumni all over the world continue to be enthusiastic about this new community. Thousands of you have already begun to take advantage of the Alumni Online Community’s resources and benefits. We are very excited to announce the revised online class notes section, where photos can now be posted with your personal class note. Our alumni club pages also continue to grow with new members and activities in several areas across the country. Don’t miss out on events near you. Visit these pages regularly to see what’s happening.
Another exciting Reunion Weekend is quickly approaching. Reunion 2003, May 15–18, will include several new activities, as well as those events we have come to love, including the Friday-night clambake, Saturday’s “Spree Day” picnic, class dinners and Dancing Under the Stars. One of our newest events is a Recognition Celebration on Thursday, May 15, to honor all of our alumni volunteers. We will also dedicate the Thomas M. ’62 and Joan E. ’60 Dolan Field House, which honors Tom and Joan for their many years of service to Clark. If this is your reunion year or if you are one of our many alumni volunteers, I hope to see you back on campus for Reunion 2003. If it is not your reunion year, this weekend is still a great opportunity to meet with friends from other classes and to re-visit the memories of your college years. Everyone is welcome.
Finally, in these difficult economic times, your financial gift to the University—no matter how much—is always greatly appreciated. Your support helps Clark provide top-quality education, while attracting the best students and faculty to the University.
Sincerely,
Dimitry Anselme ’93
Alumni Association President
Alumni Admissions News
I am happy to announce that our membership has grown this fall. I appreciate that each of our Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) members is willing to dedicate their time and energy to our efforts. I would like to welcome 70 new AAP members, which gives us 582 active volunteers around the world.
This fall, AAP volunteers covered 76 college fairs in 16 states and one foreign country. In addition, alumni attended or hosted 16 Clark on the Road: Information Sessions. The Interview Initiative is now in full swing. Alumni are interviewing students who apply prior to Jan. 15 and have not had an on-campus interview. Our office estimates that more than 1,500 students will be eligible for this alumni interview. If you are able to assist in this initiative, we need your participation. The interviewing will continue through the end of February.
In addition to joining the Alumni Admissions Program, alumni can get involved with their alma mater in many other ways. I invite you to support Clark’s admissions efforts by sharing your Clark experience with high-school students you know. Your positive experiences at Clark are testimony to all that the University has to offer.
First, encourage families to visit campus for a tour or an information session. Second, refer students to Clark’s Web site, www.clarku.edu, where they can learn more about recent activities at the University, academic programs and admissions criteria. New Web pages profile three current students and their weekly activities, www.clarku.edu/clarkdiaries. Alumni are also encouraged to waive the application fee for the student. Please see page 17 for the fee-waiver form.
Lastly, you may consider writing a letter of recommendation on behalf of an applicant. We continue to look for quality students who will fit in well with the Clark community.
Thank you again for all your enthusiasm and support of the Alumni Admissions initiatives. If you have any questions or would like to join the AAP, please contact me at 800-GO-CLARK, aap@clarku.edu.
