Student athletes recognized for achievement
Athletic Department award winners and senior athletes were honored at the Athletic Awards Program on May 2. Prior to the awards program, a scholar-athlete reception was held, honoring 107 student-athletes who earned a 3.5 GPA for the 2006 spring semester and/or 2006 fall semester and/or have a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
For the second year in a row, Ashley Auclair '07 was honored with the Alice Higgins Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete. A four-year starter for the women 's basketball team, the center and co-captain capped her career by becoming the seventh player on Clark 's all-time scoring list with 1,452 points. Auclair was the program's first-ever player to receive the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie and Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons. Auclair, a psychology major, also earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference and Clark Scholar Athlete honors for the past four years.
Matt Talbot '07 received the Fred Hebert Trophy, for the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark athletics. A four-year starting goalkeeper for the men 's soccer squad, Talbot earned NEWMAC second-team honors, National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-New England fourth team accolades and D3kicks.com All-New England Region second team recognition this season. Talbot completed his career eighth in the nation in goals against average (.397) and topped the conference in save percentage (.894).
Kaitlin Kelley '07 was recognized with the M. Hazel Hughes Trophy for the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark athletics. An outstanding two-sport athlete, Kelley, a goalkeeper and co-captain, was a two-time NEWMAC first-team field hockey All-Star, who also received National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England East All-Regional first-team honors this year. Kelley finished 15th in Division III in career saves (710) and nationally ranked third and sixth, respectively, in saves in a game (29 vs. Wheaton College) and saves per game (12.38).
Gunnar Hagstrom '07 received the Russ Granger Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete. Selected to the baseball NEWMAC All-Conference second team as a junior, Hagstrom 's contribution on the field helped lead the Cougars to the most wins in a season (17) in 2005. Hagstrom, a two-time scholar athlete, was also a three-year letter-winner on the men 's basketball team.
Men's soccer player Brian Hersey '07 received the Senior Class Award, presented annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors.
Tim Mulvehill '07, an intramural supervisor, earned the Richie Fairbanks Service Award for outstanding contribution to the athletic program.
Cheryl Elwell, director of Academic Technology and Classroom Services at Clark, received a Special Service Award. Elwell was instrumental in launching live CougarCasts this year for Clark athletic teams.
Athletic season recaps:
Baseball Clark (13-19, 5-7 NEWMAC) punched its ticket to new records in season hits (328), triples (12), RBIs (197) and batting average (.317) on the way to its ninth consecutive trip to the NEWMAC Tournament.
Nick Tapper '07, Joe Pasciucco '07 and Joe Silva '08 received second-team All-Conference honors. Tapper set a new mark for putouts in a season with 241.
Softball Led by head coach Linda Wage, who notched her 300th career-victory this season, Clark set six new school records and recorded its most overall wins (19-16) and highest NEWMAC finish (4th/9-6) since the 2001-02 campaign. Additionally, Clark broke the record for homeruns (21) and assists (398) in a season.
Heather Warren '08—Clark's first-ever National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Player of the Week—set season marks in homeruns (12), total bases (113) and slugging percentage (.934), and tied the record for RBIs (59). Warren received first-team All-NEWMAC recognition, while Lauren Blake '10 was a second-team selection.
Lacrosse Clark earned its first 2-0 start since 2000 and completed the season with the second-most wins (6-7) in the program's 17-year history. Notable player accomplishments included a new record for groundballs in a career by Dan Rosenak '08 (283).
Men's Tennis The team was 3-7 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC play. Ben Gross '09 paced the Cougars in singles play with a 3-7 mark. Ben Voynick '09 represented the squad on the NEWMAC All-Academic team.
Men's Rowing The novice four began its career with a gold medal at the New Hampshire Championships during the fall. In the spring, the men 's varsity four were ranked 17th out of 23 in the New England Rowing Coaches Poll.
Women's Rowing In a preliminary heat at the New England Rowing Championships, the women's varsity eight raced to a 7:25.9 finish—the fastest-time in head coach Erick Thiemke's four-year tenure. The boat competed in the third-level final with a third-place performance (7:26.6). The Cougar women's rowing team had three placed on the All-Academic squad: Sara Brooks '08, Sarah Fealhaber '08 and Jessica Baker '09 earned the honor.
