Former longtime Clark athletic director and coach, Rocheleau Z. "Russ" Granger Jr. '38, M.A.Ed. '39, 93, of Worcester, Mass., died on March 22, 2007.

Mr. Granger was a graduate of South High School. From 1939-1942 he was a teacher and a coach at Bacon Academy in Colchester, Conn.; he was an athletic director and coach at Clark University for 44 years (1942-1986). Mr. Granger was associated with the Clark Basketball Tournament for 47 years and inducted into the Clark University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. He had been a member and chairman of numerous NCAA and ECAC committees and a past president of the New England College Conference. He was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester Hall of Fame in 2004. Clark's athletic fields are named in his honor.

"I had the pleasure of both playing for Coach Granger and knowing him as a valued and close friend," said Tom Dolan '62, former senior vice president at Clark and captain of the 1961-62 Clark basketball team. "Russ epitomized the word 'gentleman' in the best sense of the word. Throughout the years, his personal traits of kindness, loyalty, sincerity and integrity never changed in his dealings with everyone —whether it be students, players, faculty, staff or friends of Clark. He was one of the best ambassadors that Clark ever had. "

Bill Gibbons Sr. '57, who played for Mr. Granger in the mid 1950's and became a lifelong friend, delivered an impressive eulogy at his funeral. Read the transcript of the eulogy.

Herman L. "Hank" Nelson Ph.D. '54, 92, of Rochester, Minn., died on March 27, 2007.

Dr. Nelson attended Drake University and Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) and received a master 's degree from the University of Iowa. After teaching several years in Iowa junior and senior high schools, interrupted by service during World War II, he became an instructor and later a geography professor at ISTC, now the University of Northern Iowa. In 1968, Dr. Nelson accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse, where he remained until his retirement in 1979.

His interest in geography was piqued during World War II, when he earned extra money drawing maps for a geography professor, who suggested that he consider pursuing a doctorate at Clark. Dr. Nelson often shared fond recollections of his Clark professors, especially Guy Burnham.

Dr. Nelson was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, Beta Beta Beta, and Kappa Delta Pi, honorary geography, biology and education organizations. He was the author of "A Geography of Iowa" and an article on the geography of Iowa in the Encyclopedia America.

Bruce Griffin Russell x'91 of Charlottesville, Va., died unexpectedly in his home on April 13, 2007. Mr. Russell attended Clark for two years before transferring to Berklee College of Music, where he received a bachelor 's degree in music. His first assignment was Percy Jones Army Hospital; other assignments included Puerto Rico, Fort Leonardwood, Mo., and the U.S. Embassy in London, as a medical attach é. He retired from Landstuhl, Germany, in April 1974, where he was commanding officer. He continued to work for the government until 1999.

A generous benefactor, he established the Dr. Adolphe J. and Nancy Leland Schoepflin Endowed Scholarship Fund at Clark to support students of high scholastic ability who are deserving of financial aid.
