Student athletes recognized for achievement
Athletic department award winners and senior athletes were honored at the Athletic Awards Program on Tuesday, May 2. A scholar-athlete reception was held before the awards program honoring 105 athletes who earned a 3.5 GPA for the spring 2005 semester and/or fall 2005 semester and/or have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Thirty senior and graduate student athletes received Clark watches in recognition of their four years of varsity athletic participation in the same sport. The following awards were also presented at the event.
The Russ Granger Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male Athlete: Scott Foglietta '06, a four-year lacrosse player and senior captain. In 49 career games, he had 43 goals, 62 assists and 108 points. In his senior season, he helped the team earn a record seven wins. Foglietta set a school record with 10 assists during the 2005 season against Johnson State.
Alice Higgins Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete: Ashley Auclair '07, a three-year women's basketball player and captain. Auclair was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Second Team and to the all-conference team multiple times. She was the 2004 Rookie of the Year and 2005 Player of the Year. This past season, she helped the Cougars to a 17-9 record and a NEWMAC Championship. Auclair was also a key member of the 2003-04 team that went 21-7, won a NEWMAC Championship and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament. She is ranked 11th on Clark's all-time scoring list with 1, 237 points. She was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District College Division Third Team selected by COSIDA, among other honors.
The Fred Hebert Trophy, for the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: Tim Dutille '06, a four-year men's basketball player. Dutille is ranked 14th on Clark's all-time scoring list with 1,309 points. Dutille earned first-team NEWMAC honors in 2004-05 and second-team honors in 2003-04. He helped the team to a 21-7 record in 2002-03 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He ranked sixth in the league in scoring and field goal percentage, third in rebounds and eighth in free-throw percentage.
M. Hazel Hughes Trophy, for the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: volleyball player Kara Scimeca '06. A four-year starter and two-year captain, Scimeca was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team during her sophomore year and participated in the NEWVA Senior All-Star game. She was named to multiple all-tournament teams throughout her career, earned the 2005 Cobblestone Inn Invitational Most Valuable Player honors, among other honors. She holds the career record for digs per game (3.29) and season record for digs per game (4.09, 2005).
Merit Award, for a senior(s) who has had a significant impact on his/her sport: women's basketball captain Andrea Comen '06, who completed her career with 1,079 points and is ranked 14th on Clark's all-time scoring list. She was named to 2006 D3Hoops.com Women's All-Northeast Region First Team and to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. She ranked second in the league in scoring, third in assists and second in steals. Comen played a key role during the Cougars 2003-04 season, in which the team earned a 21-7 record, a NEWMAC Tournament Title and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Senior Class Award, given annually to the senior athlete(s) who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his/her athletic endeavors: Nikola Milinkovic '06 and Devon Kinnard '06. Milinkovic, a four-year member of the men's tennis team and two-year captain, has played in the number one singles and doubles position for the past three years. He has been a consistent and excellent leader within the men's tennis program and the Athletics Department.
Kinnard, a four-year men's lacrosse player and two-year captain, is a three-time Pilgrim League Academic All-League and Clark Scholar-Athlete selection. He finished his career with 53 goals, eight assists and 57 points. He received the Dolan Award in 2005 and was selected as the senior speaker for this year's Athletics Department Awards Program.
Richie Fairbanks Service Award, given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program: Chris Miller '06. Miller, who has worked in the Athletics Department for the past three years as a student photographer, producing professional quality photography. His tireless efforts will be greatly missed.
Athletics season highlights
Baseball: Gunnar Hagstrom '07 named to the 2006 NEWMAC Baseball All-Conference Second Team.
Men's Tennis: Ben Gross '09 named to the 2006 NEWMAC Men's Tennis All-Conference First Team. The Cougars reached the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time in the history of the program.
Softball: Kelly Christensen '06 named to the 2006 NEWMAC Softball All-Conference First Team and the 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-New England First Team.
Women's Crew: Sarah Brooks '08 and Sara Fealhaber '08 named to the NEWMAC Women's Rowing Varsity All-Conference Team. Kasia Baca '09 earned novice all-conference honors.
Men's Lacrosse: The team finished with a 7-8 record and the most wins in the history of the program.
2006 Hall of Fame
The Clark University Hall of Fame Committee announces the 12th class of Hall of Fame Inductees: Tony Aaronson '59, Mike Maltais '91, Becky Scherer '79, Barbara Stevens and Bob Zarzynski '63. Matt Stepanksi '42 will receive an Outstanding Service Award. The inductees will be honored on Saturday, Sept. 16, at a ceremony in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center.
