Spring sports round-up
Baseball
- Pitcher Scott Archibald '06 threw a one-hit 3-0 shutout in a NEWMAC Tournament first-round upset win against Babson. The Cougars upset Springfield 7-4 in the first game of the conference double-elimination tournament, but were knocked out of the tournament after losses to eventual champion Wheaton (4-3) and Springfield (8-4).
- Todd Mathewson '05 was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Baseball Academic All-District 1 First Team selected by CoSIDA.
- Archibald was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team, and Mathewson earned second-team honors
- The Cougars finished the 2005 season breaking school records in wins (17), hits (319), RBI (190), at-bats (1,119) and putouts (837). Mathewson ended his career breaking school records in single season RBI (36) and career RBI (96). He tied the home run record in a season with six.
Men's Lacrosse
- The following players set new school records: Daniel Rosenak '08 for ground balls in a season with 106; goalkeeper Alan Green '05 for saves in a game with 33 against Babson College; Scott Foglietta '06 for assists in a game with 10 against Johnson State. Mike Myers '06 recorded an impressive 19 ground balls against Moravian in the first game of the season, breaking his own single-game record of 11 ground balls.
- First-year Andrew Webber had an outstanding rookie season leading the team in goals with 43.
Women's Crew
- The women's varsity four boat of Emily Lescak '07, Margy Wilcox '05, Sarah Brooks '08, Ashley Blake '05 and Meryl Berger '07 finished second in the grand final and second out of 16 boats overall at the 2005 New England Championships.
- Blake and Wilcox were named to the 2005 NEWMAC All-Conference Varsity Team. Brooks was named to the all-conference novice team.
Student athletes honored for excellence
Athletic Department award winners and senior athletes were honored at Clark's Athletic Awards Program on May 3. A scholar-athlete reception was held before the awards program honoring 89 athletes who earned a 3.5 GPA for the 2004 spring semester and/or 2004 fall semester and/or have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Thirty senior and graduate-student athletes received Clark watches in recognition of their four years of varsity athletic participation in the same sport. The following awards were presented at the event.
Russ Granger Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete: Todd Mathewson '05, a four-year baseball player and senior captain. Mathewson was named to the 2005 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference second team. He received NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors the past three years and was recognized as a Clark Scholar-Athlete all four years. A management major, Mathewson has a 3.92 grade-point average and was selected to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Alice Higgins Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete: rower Ashley Blake '05. A four-year member and captain of the crew team, Blake was a member of the varsity four boat that placed second in the New England Rowing Championships in 2005—the highest achievement by a Clark boat at this event—finished third in the 2004 New England Rowing Championships and sixth at the 2004 ECAC National Championships. Blake was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Varsity Team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and received all-conference novice team honors in 2002. A government major, Blake has a 3.58 grade-point average, earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors three times and was named a Clark scholar-athlete all four years.
Fred Hebert Trophy, for the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: Brian Godard '05, a four-year crew captain and recipient of the 2004 Russ Granger Award. Godard rowed the men's varsity four boat that placed second in the 2002 New Hampshire Championships. His boat also placed sixth overall at the New England Championships in 2003 and fifth in 2004. He is a four-year scholar athlete and three-year Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member. A biology major, Godard has a 3.79 grade-point average and was selected to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
M. Hazel Hughes Trophy, for the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: softball and soccer player Jen Scavone '05. A four-year starter on both teams, she was a captain in soccer her senior year and softball her junior and senior year. A four-time selection to the All-Conference team and two-time NFCA All-American, Scavone earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2002 and ended her career with the 2005 NEWMAC Player of the Year Award. A management major, she has a 3.44 grade point average and has earned Clark scholar-athlete honors the past two years.
Merit Award, for seniors who have had a significant impact on their sport: Ashley Perez '05, a four-year starter on the field hockey team and three-year starter on the softball team. Perez is one of the best field hockey players to wear a Clark uniform. Only the second player in the history of the field hockey program to receive NFHCA National All-America honors twice, Perez was selected to the first team her senior year and the third team as a junior. In addition, she earned NFHCA New England East Regional first team honors in 2003 and 2004 and regional second-team honors in 2002. Perez was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior North-South All-Star Game. She earned NEWMAC All-Conference first-team honors her senior year and second team honors her sophomore and junior years. She ranks 11th among Clark's scoring leaders with 20 goals, 27 assists and 67 points.
Senior Class Award, given annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors: Oliver Hartman '05 and Margaretta Wilcox '05. Hartman, a four-year member of the men's tennis team and two-year captain, played at the number one singles and doubles position for the past three years. He was a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as co-chair of the leadership subcommittee. He has provided outstanding leadership for the men's tennis program and last year led the team to its first winning season in over a decade.
Wilcox, a four-year rower and two-year captain, was one of Clark's top rowers the past four years. She earned NEWMAC All-Conference Varsity Team honors her junior and senior year. She rowed the varsity four boat that finished second at the 2005 New England Rowing Championships and third in 2004. Her boat also placed sixth in the 2004 ECAC Championships. She earned Clark scholar-athlete honors in 2004 and 2005. Wilcox served on the Student- Athlete Advisory Committee for two years and was actively involved in community-service projects.
Richie Fairbanks Service Award, given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program: Sara McGinley '05, who has served as a volunteer women's basketball manager for the past four years and has worked tirelessly for the team. Attending 99 percent of the practices and all of the games, she is a quiet behind-the-scenes worker who will be impossible to replace.
Scavone earns Louisville SLugger/NFCA Division III honors
Outfielder Jen Scavone '05 was named to the 2005 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-America First Team. In addition, Scavone earned NFCA New England Regional All-America First Team and New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) All-Star First Team honors for the fourth consecutive year. She was also named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Softball Academic All-District I First Team. As a management major, she has a 3.44 grade-point average and has earned Clark scholar-athlete honors the past two years.
A first-team All-America selection in 2002, Scavone is the only softball player in Clark history to be named an All-American. She finished her impressive career earning 2005 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year honors and was selected to the all-conference first team for the fourth consecutive year. She led the team in batting average (.481), doubles (10) and home runs (3). She ranked in the top 10 in six offensive statistical categories in the conference, including first in batting average, fifth in home runs (6), fifth in doubles (10), fourth in runs scored (32), eighth in stolen bases (10) and seventh in triples (2). Scavone led the conference in batting average the last three years.
Alumnus named new chair of Athletic Hall of Fame Committee
Athletic Director Linda Moulton and Clark's Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recently announced the appointment of Vincent P. Foderingham '89 as new chair of the committee. A three-year baseball player and captain his senior year, Foderingham also participated on the basketball team during the 1985-86 season. Foderingham majored in sociology and is currently a corporate-risk manager for Raytheon in Waltham, Mass.
In addition, the committee announced that the Clark Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will be held every other year beginning in fall 2006. For additional information regarding the Clark Athletic Hall of Fame, visit www.clarku.edu/halloffame.
