Awards honor student athletes

The Athletic Awards Program was held on May 4. At the event, 82 scholar-athletes were honored for earning a 3.5 GPA for the 2003 spring and/or fall semester and/or for having a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and 25 senior and graduate-student athletes received Clark watches in recognition of their four years of varsity athletic participation in the same sport. The following awards were presented at the program.

Russ Granger Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete: Brian Godard '05, a three-year rower, three-year captain and stroke seat. Godard, a biology major, has maintained a 3.9 grade-point average.

Alice Higgins Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete: Jen Scavone '05, a three-year starter on both the soccer and softball teams and captain in softball this year. Scavone led the 2004 team in five offensive categories and earned individual honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association. A management major, Scavone has maintained a 3.42 grade point average and has earned Clark scholar-athlete honors the past two years.

Fred Hebert Trophy, for the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: Dave McNamara '04, a four-year member of the basketball and baseball teams and a captain of both teams in his senior year. In basketball, he was a four-time NEWMAC All-Conference selection, among other honors. He is ranked second on Clark's all-time scoring list with 1,827 points. In baseball, McNamara earned All-Conference first team honors in 2004. A management major, he has achieved a 3.22 grade-point average.

M. Hazel Hughes Trophy, for the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics: field hockey player and captain Jessica Petitt '04, and two-year women's basketball captain Rachael Turkington '03, M.A. '04. Petitt, a four-year starter, led the team in scoring with 14 goals, 11 assists and 39 points. Among her many honors, she received National Field Hockey Coaches Association All America First Team honors. She finished her career tied for first on Clark's all-time scoring list, tied for second in career goals (49) and is third in career assists (30). Turkington, who ended her career with 1,361 points and is ranked eighth on Clark's all-time scoring list, was named the 2004 NEWMAC Player of the Year and earned All-Conference first team honors for the second consecutive year. Turkington received the Alice Higgins Award in 2003.

Merit Award, for seniors who have had a significant impact on their sport: Roy Barnum '04, a three-year transfer swimmer who led the Cougars with six multiple-event wins during the year. He recorded times in the top five of all time in 2004 in the 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard backstroke, the 50-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley. He also holds the school record in the 100-yard IM (56.28). Barnum is a member of two of Clark's record-setting relay teams, the 200-yard medley (1:14.66) and the 400-yard medley (3:43.69).

Senior Class Award, for the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors: Brent Kenneway '04 and Jerome Boutaud '04. Kenneway, a four-year basketball player, was a member of the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight teams in 2001 and 2002, an NCAA Tournament team in 2003 and teams that won three conference championships. He was a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the athletic board. Boutaud, a four-year cross-country runner and two-year captain, was one of Clark's top runners for the past three years. He was also a crew coxswain for two years and served on the SAAC for three years.

Richie Fairbanks Service Award, for individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program: Peter Kirschner '04, the men's basketball student assistant coach for the past two years. Kirschner also volunteered as a manager and scorekeeper his first two years and has worked endless hours for the basketball team.


Spring season wrap-up:

Men's lacrosse Season record: 4-9. Mike Myers '06 set new school records in ground balls in a game (11 vs. Curry College, 04/06) and ground balls in a season (83). He was also ranked third in the Pilgrim League in ground balls.

Softball Season record: 13-17. Captain and outfielder Jen Scavone '05 earned NEWMAC All-Conference first team honors, National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), ECAC New England All Star and New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) Regional first team honors for the third consecutive year. She became the 10th player to reach the 100-hit mark at Clark and is ranked fifth on the all-time career hit list with 131.

Baseball Season record: 13-19. Outfielder Dave McNamara '04 earned NEWMAC All-Conference first team honors, while infielder Michael Burnham '04 was named to the second team. Pitcher Tony Groccia '04 threw a perfect game in the last game of the season and final game of his career and led the Cougars to an 11-0 win over Gordon College in game two of a double header. Groccia received Division III National Pitcher of the Week honorable mention from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and ECAC New England Co-Pitcher of the Week following the perfect game. McNamara set a new mark for RBI in a season (31), and Burnham set records in putouts in a season (224), putouts in a career (695) and career total chances (739).

Men's tennis Season record: 6-5, the Cougars' best record since 1992.

Men's crew The varsity four boat placed fifth out of six boats in the grand final at the New England Championships with a time of 8:57.34. At the ECAC National Championships, the Cougars placed fourth out of six in the petite race and 10th out of 15 overall. The men claimed the Worcester City Championship varsity four title.

Women's crew The varsity four boat placed third out of six boats in the grand final at the New England Championships with a time of 9:32.7, the highest achievement by a Clark boat at the New England Championships. The Cougars finished first out of six in their heat to qualify for the final. At the ECAC National Championships, the Cougars placed sixth in the grand final and sixth out of 17 overall. In addition, the women claimed the Worcester City Championship varsity four title. Ashley Blake '05 and Margy Wilcox '05 earned NEWMAC Varsity All-Conference honors while Meryl Berger '07 was named to the NEWMAC Novice All-Conference team.

NEWMAC All-Academic Team:

The following Clark athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic Team for the fall, winter or spring of 2003-2004. Honorees earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 after the spring 2003 or fall 2003 semester and attained at least sophomore standing.
