Student athletes recognized for excellence
Athletic Department award winners and senior athletes were honored at the annual Athletic Awards Program on April 28. Ninety-nine athletes were honored for earning a 3.5 GPA for the spring and/or fall 2002 semester and/or earning a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Thirty-seven senior athletes received Clark watches in recognition of four years of varsity athletic participation in the same sport. The following Athletic Department awards were presented at the program.
Russ Granger Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete: Nathan Lavery ’03, a four-year soccer player and team captain in his senior year. The economics and government major earned a 3.7 grade-point average, is a two-time member of the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team and received Clark Scholar-Athlete honors all four years.
Alice Higgins Award, for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete: Rachael Turkington ’03, a three-year basketball starter and team captain in her senior year. Turkington led the team in scoring and finished the year leading the nation in three-point field goals per game. She also earned many individual honors throughout her Clark career, including NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors and Clark Scholar-Athlete honors three times. The psychology major earned a 3.8 grade-point average.
Fred Hebert Trophy, for the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark athletics: Sean Fleming ’03, a four-year basketball player and two-year team captain. Among his many individual honors, Fleming was named to the 2003 National Association of Basketball Coaches All-America Second Team, placing him among the top 16 Division III college basketball players in the country. He also received the annual NEBCA Bob Cousy award, given to the most outstanding Division I, II or III New England men’s basketball player under six feet. He is fifth on Clark’s all-time scoring list. Fleming is a management major with a 3.18 grade-point average.
M. Hazel Hughes Trophy, for the outstanding senior female athlete whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark athletics: Julie Mazeika ’03, a four-year field hockey and softball player and team captain for both sports in her senior year. In field hockey, she is sixth on Clark’s all-time scoring list and has earned many individual honors. A three-year starter on the softball team, she compiled a .293 batting average while helping Clark reach the ECAC Tournament in each of the last three years. The biology major and two-time Clark Scholar-Athlete earned a 3.4 grade-point average and received a fellowship to conduct biology research at Clark last summer. She is currently conducting cancer research through an internship with the National Institutes of Health.
Merit Awards, for seniors who have had a significant impact on their sport: Jesse Egan ’03, a three-year field hockey goalkeeper and starter her junior and senior year. She finished the 2002 season ranked first in the nation in goals against average (.56). In 23 games in 2002, she recorded a school record 15 shutouts. Among her many individual honors, Egan appeared in the Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd” column on April 7, 2003.
Senior Class Award, for the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors: Jamie Clark ’03, a four-year swimmer and team captain his senior year and first-year player on the lacrosse team this spring.
Richie Fairbanks Service Award, for individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program: Scott Zoback ’04, men’s lacrosse team manager, member of the Athletic Board, and volunteer photographer for the Athletic Department.
Dr. Theodore Nicol Sportsmanship Award, for a member of the tennis team who best exemplifies the highest traits of sportsmanship, integrity and camaraderie: P.J. Rosenbaum ’04, team captain and a three-year member of the men’s tennis team
NEWMAC ALL-American team
Baseball players Anthony Groccia ’04, Matthew Marin ’04, Todd Mathewson ’05 and Brock Tibert ’03, women’s crew rowers Ashley Blake ’05 and Hana Johnson ’05 and softball player Lindsay Demers ’05 were among the 147 student-athletes named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference spring 2003 All-Academic Team. Honorees earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 after the fall 2002 semester and attained at least sophomore standing.
