Clark University - Clark News summer 2003
In Memoriam (summer 2003)
Dr. Burte Guterman '29, a longtime dedicated supporter of Clark, died April 4, 2003.
After graduating from Clark, Dr. Guterman earned an M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. He became a psychiatrist with a private practice in Worcester and was an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. He also served in World War II as a captain with the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
Dr. Guterman was an active alumnus, contributing to the life of the University in many ways. He served as chair of the Jonas Clark Fellows, the University’s leading group of annual donors, for several years. He was a class agent, chaired his reunion committee and served on the former Board of Visitors. He was also a member of the Jonas Clark Fellows Executive Committee and Clark’s Legacy Society, which recognizes those who have provided for Clark in their estate plans. In 1984, the Alumni Association presented Dr. Guterman with a citation in recognition of his fund-raising work on behalf of Clark. In 1986, he received the Distinguished Service Award, the Alumni Association’s highest honor.
While a student at Clark, Dr. Guterman participated in the Glee Club and the orchestra, and served as assistant manager for the basketball team and the advertising manager, manager and editor of the Pasticcio. He was a member of the Student-Faculty Council and Clark Scientific Society and played intramural basketball. He was also an accomplished tennis player.
“Burte was a remarkable individual and a loyal, distinguished son of Clark,” says Senior Vice President Tom Dolan ’62. “He had a great sense of humor, the ability to put everyone at ease, a sense of quiet determination and the rare ability to listen. He will be dearly missed by all of us in the Clark family. In my 40 years at Clark, Burte clearly stands out as a shining example of what we hope all our graduates will become.”
Donald Isaac M.A. '58, Ph.D. '63 died Feb. 27 at the age of 70 after a series of illnesses. He leaves his wife of 42 years, Sylvia, and his son Richard.
Dr. Isaac earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in psychology at Clark and lived in Worcester until 1995, when he and his wife moved to Seattle. He specialized in youth and abnormal psychology and maintained a private practice in Worcester from 1963 to 1994. He was a professor of psychology and human services at Assumption College in the late 1960s and at Fitchburg State College from 1971 to 1994. At Fitchburg State, Dr. Isaac instituted a course on the psychology of captivity and the Holocaust, which greatly affected the lives of many of his students. He edited a newsletter for families of past and present prison inmates and was a psychologist at the Worcester Youth Guidance Center, St. Vincent Hospital and Medfield State Hospital. Dr. Isaac was active in community service and served on many boards, including Children’s Protective Services of Central Massachusetts and Jewish Family Service of Worcester. He won many awards for his work.
Dr. Isaac was also an active advocate for equal rights for gays and lesbians. He was particularly concerned about gay youth self-esteem and suicide and planned to write a book on the subject after his retirement. After moving to Seattle, he served for five years on the board of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)-Seattle, following five years in Worcester’s PFLAG. He marched in Worcester and Seattle pride marches, contributed articles to the Seattle Gay News and presented at the 1992 PFLAG National Convention in Seattle, as well as at various gay youth and diversity workshops in the Northeast.
Dr. Isaac’s other main interest was Jewish history and the Holocaust. He read voraciously on these subjects, amassing a large collection of related books and videos. He also traveled to Israel twice.
Col. G. Robert Latham '48 (USAIR Ret.), formerly of Worcester, died Feb. 4 after an illness.
A Worcester native, Colonel Latham graduated from South High School and majored in business at Clark. He also graduated from the Massachusetts Military Academy.
Colonel Latham worked more than 41 years in the Group Pension Department of State Mutual Life Assurance company, now Allmerica Financial, retiring in 1989 as assistant vice president of group pensions. He was instrumental in making the group pension department a major part of Allmerica Financial.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Central European Campaign. He then served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve before retiring in 1979. He served in many capacities, including Company commander, Infantry Advance Instructor at Ft. Benning, Ga., Instructor at Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and six years in the Logistics Directorate at the Pentagon in Washington. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the 25-Year Club at Allmerica, the Association of the United States Army, and the Retired and Reserve Officers Associations.
