Alumni news and notes (spring 2008)

Alumni and Friends:

I want to thank you for your support during my tenure as your alumni president. The time has gone too quickly, but I am proud of our accomplishments and very optimistic about the future of our association.

During my tenure, I had the opportunity to meet many of you and work side by side while planning the future of the association. We have made steps toward a more inclusive, expanded alumni association, and the work has been done to ensure that this continues in the right direction. We are always looking for more volunteers and leaders to join our alumni council, so if you know of someone or if you are interested, please contact me or Aixa Kidd, director of Alumni Affairs.

Additionally, it would be great to get your ideas for programs, events and next steps as we work to develop a new multiyear alumni plan. Let us know your thoughts!

The association is in great hands, as the president position transfers over to Roland Aputem '82. Roland is a good friend, an effective communicator and a strong leader. He is excited about this opportunity, and I know he will do an excellent job. I wish him all the best in this new position.

In my new role as immediate past-president, I look forward to contributing when and where I can. I will be encouraging more alumni to join our ranks and will continue to attend the various alumni programs of our Clark regional communities.

Of course, this starts with Reunion 2008 which is quickly approaching. I have requested good weather for this year, and am looking forward to seeing several old friends and meeting new ones for this annual tradition. I hope you plan to attend, particularly if you are one of the anniversary class years. The reunion committees have been working hard to help us plan some exciting new events including an international food gala, an alumni book panel, a live swing band and additional class dinner surprises. For more information, visit clarku.edu/alumni/reunion.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your president. I look forward to seeing you at Reunion 2008.

News from the Alumni and Parent Admissions program

College fairs are one of the cornerstones of Clark's recruitment process and one of the busiest APAP activities. They provide an opportunity for us to establish personal connections with our prospective students and their families and encourage a student's interest in Clark. Each year, over 5,000 prospective students and their families meet with Clark alumni, parents and staff representatives at college fairs.

Our goal is to staff every college fair to which we have been invited if it makes sense for us to attend. The chart below shows the number of college fair invitations we receive annually has increased steadily; it also shows a steady increase in the number of college fairs we staffed, in large part because of the significant involvement of our APAP members.

For several reasons, Clark was not as successful in securing college-fair coverage this fall, and preliminary numbers for 2007-08 (which are not on the chart) suggest that Clark's trend of keeping pace with its increased need will soon end. Clark needs your continued help in order to restore and expand our ability to staff college fairs.

To help us in this endeavor, the Admissions Office has added a new feature on its pass-word protected APAP Web site. Volunteers can now log on to the Web site at clarku.edu/apap and find a new interactive map feature called View College Fair Listings, which lists, in real time, all the college fairs that need volunteer staffing.

Simply click on a Clark icon to view the particulars of college fairs in your area. If you are available to staff the fair, click on the link labeled date and time, type in your name and any other relevant information into the e-mail message and send it to us. Once we receive the e-mail from you, we will process the fair as we currently do. We encourage you to check this site frequently.

College fairs are a fun and meaningful way to stay connected to Clark and help in its recruiting efforts. Please know that we appreciate all you do for Clark and look forward to our continued work together.
