Women's basketball opens with 10 straight victories

The women’s basketball team finished the season 17-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference. The Cougars fell to eventual New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Champion Springfield in the semifinals. Clark won its 10th straight Worcester City Tip-Off Tournament title and started the season winning 10 straight games, including an 82-77 win over national power Salem State.

Captain and guard Andrea Comen ’06 was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team for the first time in her career and was named to the D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Region First Team. Comen had an impressive senior year leading the team in points per game (16.6), assists per game (3.8) and steals per game (1.4). Comen finished the year ranked second in the league in scoring, third in assists and second in steals. She became the 15th women’s basketball player at Clark to surpass 1,000 points with 15 points on Feb. 4, against MIT. Comen completed her career with 1,079 points and is ranked 14th on Clark’s all-time scoring list.

Captain and center Ashley Auclair ’07 was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team. The 2004 Rookie of the Year and 2005 Player of the Year is making her second appearance on the second team and this marks her third straight selection to the all-conference team. Auclair was second on the team in points per game (14.3) and first in rebounds (8.3). In 26 games she recorded nine double-doubles. Auclair finished the season ranked fourth in the league in scoring, fifth in field goal-percentage (48.9), fourth in rebounds and 10th in blocks (.7) She became the 14th women’s basketball player at Clark to surpass 1,000 points with 22 points on Dec. 19, 2005 against Trinity. Auclair is ranked 11th on Clark’s all-time scoring list with 1, 237 points.

Dutille finishes impressive career in men's basketball

The men’s basketball team finished the season 11-15 with wins during the season over two-time NEWMAC Champion WPI and cross-town rival Worcester State.

Center Tim Dutille ’06 completed an impressive four-year career and became the 23rd men’s basketball player at Clark to surpass 1,000 points with 15 points on Dec. 8, 2005 against Fitchburg State. He finished his career with 1,309 points and is ranked 14th on Clark’s all-time scoring list. In 105 career games, he averaged 12.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the floor. Dutille earned first-team honors in 2004-05 and second team honors in 2003-04. He led the team this year in scoring with 15.5 points per game and grabbed a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game. Dutille finished the season ranked seventh in the NEWMAC in scoring, sixth in field-goal percentage (50.7), fourth in rebounds and eighth in free-throw percentage (79.2).

Swimming and Diving season round-up

The men’s swimming and diving team finished the 2005-06 season 7-5 and above .500 for the first time since 2002. Clark placed sixth at the NEWMAC Championships, its best finish since 2002. Clark’s 259 points were the most since 2002. The Cougars scored only 94 points in 2005. Drew Jackson ’09 finished third in the 200 backstroke—the best finish by a Clark swimmer since 2002—while Dave Critchlow ’08 broke the school record in the 100 backstroke (56.38), and Sal Pezzella ’09 finished fifth in both diving events.

The women’s team finished the 2006 season 7-6 and above .500 for the first time since 2002. Clark placed 10th at the NEWMAC Championships. Clark’s 125 points were the most scored since 2002 when the team earned 91 points.

Jess Cullen ’09 finished seventh in the 100 back (1:04.92)—the highest individual finish for Clark since 2003. She also finished 12th in the 200 back in 2:20.29, fifth fastest all-time for Clark. Kayleigh Lagasse ’09 became the first Clark swimmer to score in three individual events since 2003. Lagasse won the consolation final of the 200 fly with a time of 2:18.49, just .55 off the school record. She also placed 13th in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.35, good for third on Clark’s all-time list, and placed 14th in the 100 fly (1:03.06). The 400 medley relay team of Cullen, Lagasse, Lindsey Stone ’09 and Dominique Wilkins ’08 registered the second-fastest time in school history (4:17.88). Cullen led off the relay in 1:04.12, good for third on Clark’s all-time list for the 100 back. Wilkins finished 10th in the 100 breast (1:13.59). Caitlin Hanson ’08 finished 13th in the 100 back (1:07.07) and 15th in the 200 back (2:24.85).

Student athletes earn all-academic honors

The following winter athletes were named to the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic Team. Honorees must have: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2005 fall semester, achieved second-year academic status at his/her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
