Alumni news and notes (spring 2004)
Dear Clark Alumni,
The Alumni Association has been planning a fantastic Reunion weekend, May 21-23. This year’s festivities include planning meetings for the upcoming 100th anniversaries of Kappa Phi and Pasticcio. Whether or not your class is celebrating a special anniversary this year, you’ll definitely want to be on campus. I encourage you to come back to Clark, meet old and new friends and watch the Commencement ceremonies, especially with alumni from the 50-Year Association leading the 2004 graduates in the Commencement procession.
The campus has been bustling with events all semester. Academic Spree Day was a great success, with undergraduates showcasing the best that a Clark education has to offer. The campus also hosted two art exhibits, interesting speakers in various lecture series and many music, film and theater events. The Alumni Association also supported the Graduate Students Multidisciplinary Conference with a special luncheon for graduate alumni and students.
The new biological sciences building remains the biggest change on campus. Much progress has been made on the construction, as well as in fundraising for the project (see page 2). Visit www.clarku.edu/sciences to view the construction site, learn about giving opportunities and read about Clark’s work in the sciences.
This has also been a great year for admissions, and I congratulate all the alumni admissions volunteers who helped bring in the most applications in Clark’s history. My thanks go to all of you who volunteer in various ways for the University. I encourage you to stay involved with Clark. Check out our volunteer opportunities on the alumni Web pages, www.clarku.edu/alumni, to learn more about how you can give back to the University.
This is my last letter to you as president of the Alumni Association. It’s been a pleasure to work on your behalf. Over the past two years, we’ve transitioned to an executive board format with a committee structure, making it easier for you to participate in the Alumni Association’s activities. We launched the Alumni Online Community, which has been a big success, and worked with the Admissions Office to bring some amazing students to campus. We persist in our efforts to involve more alumni in the life of the University, continue to increase our alumni contributions to the Clark Fund and have increased the number of regional events held throughout the year.
I wish all the best to incoming President Faith Linsky ’76. I haven’t met an alumnus/a yet who matches Faith’s enthusiasm for and commitment to Clark. She and this executive board will lead the Alumni Association to outstanding achievements in the coming years.
I’d like to thank a few people as I leave my post as Alumni Association president. My thanks go to Faith Linsky and Rich Caswell ’89 for their enthusiasm, friendship and support, and to Larry Hershoff ’71, who has been such a role model for me. I also want to thank all the staff in the Alumni Office for the work, energy and smiles they offer 150 percent of the time. And I especially want to thank Alumni Director Bill Bennett M.P.A. ’97, a friend, mentor and ally on so many fronts. I extend my gratitude to Bill for the time and energy he so generously gives to the University.
Now, I’ll be checking the alumni Web pages for new volunteer opportunities and ways to stay involved with the Alumni Association’s executive board. I encourage you to do the same.
Sincerely,
Dimitry Anselme ’93
Alumni Association President
Alumni Admissions News
Over the past several years, we have seen a significant increase in applications to Clark. This year we received 4,221 applications, which surpassed our goal of 4,100. In order to continue to personalize the admissions process, we need alumni to continue to volunteer their time and support to the Alumni Admissions Program (AAP).
The AAP is an organization of Clark graduates who volunteer to represent the University to prospective students and parents. This program is active year round with a variety of programs. Through the Admissions Office, Clark asks AAP members to share their Clark experiences with prospective students, allowing families to hear first-hand what Clark has to offer. In addition, AAP enables our office to provide greater personalization in the recruitment process. We believe personal attention reflects the character of a Clark education and is an important way for families to get to know what Clark is all about.
We currently have 600 active AAP members. These members cover 125 college fairs each year, complete more than 800 interview assignments, host 10-20 regional information sessions and congratulate hundreds of admitted students by phone or e-mail.
Alumni Admissions is a great way to meet new Clarkies and continue our growth at the University. Please consider becoming a member. We ask that you commit to the program for a minimum of one year and a minimum of five hours. We will provide you with training and regular updates to help you prepare for your volunteer work.
For more information, please e-mail me at aap@clarku.edu; call 508-793-7431; or go to www.clarku.edu/alumni and click on Alumni Admissions Program.
Thank you to our 600 active AAP members who have worked hard to help us achieve our goals this year. Check the summer Clarknews to learn about our incoming first-year class.
