Clark University - Clark News spring 2003
Alumni news and notes (spring 2003)
Dear Clark Alumni,
This is a time of honored traditions for the Clark community. Seniors are engaging in the same rituals many of us experienced—completing capstone projects and theses, polishing résumés, attending job fairs and completing graduate-school applications. Likewise, the University is preparing for commencement ceremonies, and the Alumni Office is planning yet another successful Reunion weekend. I hope you are planning to return to campus for Reunion, May 15–18. Many alumni have already registered online at www.clarku.edu/reunion. If you haven't, please register and come back to see your old friends.
We will begin Reunion weekend with our traditional New England Clambake under the Big Top, which is always a fun time. During the weekend, we will also dedicate the new Thomas M. '62 and Joan E. '60 Dolan Field House. Please join us in honoring the Dolans for their commitment to the University. This year, Reunion also features two "Back to the Classroom" events, one with Professor and Dean of the College Douglas Little and the other with Professor Timothy Shary. Continuing with tradition, the Class of 1953 and the 50-Year Association will lead the Class of 2003 in the commencement procession. As always, there are plenty of opportunities during this weekend to reconnect with old friends and memories and to welcome the new generation of Clark alumni.
In other news, Alumni Association Vice President Faith Linsky '76 and I have been working on issues of governance. In keeping with the goals of our Alumni Strategic Plan, we have returned to the executive-board model. We have selected committee chairs for each Alumni Association committee, which will enhance our effectiveness and make it easier for you to join a committee wherever you are in the world. Through these committees, you will be able to work on assignments and receive information about pertinent Association and University issues. You will not be bound to the traditional council meeting dates we have used in the past. Committees will be able to meet as often as necessary and use new technologies to accomplish their work. Please log on to the Alumni Online Community to see which alumni volunteer opportunities may interest you and get involved.
Thanks to all of you who have given your time and effort to Clark and the Alumni Association. This Reunion weekend, an Alumni Volunteer Recognition Celebration will honor and thank all of you for your work as Clark's ambassadors across the United States and around the world. If you have volunteered for Clark, please come and enjoy this celebration.
I hope to see all of you at Reunion 2003, May 15—18.
Sincerely,
Dimitry Anselme '93
Alumni Association President
Alumni Admissions News
Why does a student choose Clark? Is it the strong academic reputation, the individualized learning, the accelerated degree program or research opportunities? Is it our commitment to the community, the student-run clubs and organizations, or the diversity? The answer is "yes" to all of these questions. And you bring those aspects of Clark to life for prospective students.
AAP members are able to connect with many students, but Clark continues to grow in many ways. This year, we surpassed our goal of 3,900 applications—a Clark record! Our goal is to enroll 564 new students this fall. In order to achieve this goal and continue the successes resulting from our personalized admissions process, we need to increase the number of AAP volunteers. Please contact me if you are able to commit any time to this program. There are many options, including attending college fairs, interviewing, calling or e-mailing students and hosting events.
Clark currently has 600 active Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) members. More than 350 members shared their Clark experience with more than 500 prospective students in alumni interviews this past winter. Each year, hundreds of students meet alumni at more than 100 college fairs. Their ability to connect with a Clark representative makes a significant difference in whether or not they become more seriously interested in Clark. We have found that students who meet with alumni representatives tend to apply at a higher rate than those who do not. Our prospective students and families appreciate the personalized contact we provide, and your perspective as a former Clarkie, a parent and a member of their community is particularly valued.
To get involved, please contact me at 508-793-7193 or tuber@clarku.edu, or visit the Admissions Office.
I sincerely thank each of the active AAP members for all the time and energy you have given to the program and to Clark. Please join us at Reunion for the Volunteer Recognition Celebration on May 15.
Thank you again for all your enthusiasm and support of the Alumni Admissions initiatives. If you have any questions or would like to join the AAP, please contact me at 800-GO-CLARK, aap@clarku.edu.
