Sports Briefs (fall 2007)
Softball All-Star named NCAA Division III RBI Champion
Heather Warren '08 was named the 2007 NCAA
Division III statistical softball champion for runs batted in (RBI) per game and
distinguished as the top Division III player in the country in that particular
category.
Warren earned the accolade by knocking in 59 runs in
35 games. The Cougar shortstop also tied the Clark single-season mark for RBI
(59) and set new records in homeruns (12), total bases (113) and slugging
percentage (.934).
"It's such a huge honor," Warren says. "I had a great season with my team
and look forward to an even better year next spring."
"Heather's performance was absolutely amazing," says
veteran head softball coach Linda Wage. "Something like that doesn't happen
every day – especially in a category like RBI. She was in a zone, and her
efforts helped our offense tremendously. It's a great honor for Clark
University."
Warren, the conference leader in hitting (.471),
also earned four all-star honors including NEWMAC All-Conference (first team),
the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New
England first-team, the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association
(NEISCA) first-team and the ECAC All-Star second-team. She joined Clark's
Century Hits Club with 119 career hits this spring.
Cahoon named head volleyball and men’s tennis coach
Mickey Cahoon has been named Clark’s head women’s
volleyball and men’s tennis coach. Cahoon takes over the men’s tennis program
for Jim Hayes, who has served as part-time coach for a combined nine years and
directed both the men’s and women’s programs this past season. Hayes will
continue to lead the women’s tennis team.
The adage, “good things come to those who wait,”
rings true for Cahoon, who cashed in on 10 years of experience to land his first
collegiate coaching job at Clark.
“It’s been a dream of mine to enter into the college
coaching ranks,” said the Bourne, Mass., native. “I’m excited to have the
opportunity to start at Clark.”
Cahoon joins the Cougars after spending the last
three seasons as head varsity volleyball coach at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham,
Mass., where he led Notre Dame to a 50-17 overall record and a pair of
consecutive trips to the Division II South Sectional Tournament, including a
championship appearance last year.
Prior to Notre Dame, Cahoon assisted 10-time state
championship head coach Tom Turco at Barnstable High School. While at the helm
of the varsity tennis team at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School (1998-2004),
he was named Cape Cod Times Tennis Coach of the Year in 2003. Cahoon also
competes in the men’s professional division of the New England volleyball
circuit.
Head coaches Kulik and Phillips earn promotions
Head men’s soccer coach David Kulik has been
promoted to associate director of Athletics and head men’s and women’s swimming
and diving coach Paul E. Phillips has been promoted to assistant athletic
director.
“In addition to David’s and Paul’s success as
coaches, they have served their athletes and colleagues well during their
tenure,” said Athletic Director Linda Moulton. “We all have high expectations
for the program and I look forward to working together to fulfill those goals.”
Kulik, who will continue his duties as head men’s
soccer coach, has served as assistant athletic director for four years. In
addition to overseeing baseball, lacrosse, women’s tennis, women’s soccer and
cross country, Kulik will work with the Admissions Office and Alumni Affairs to
help generate greater visibility for the Athletic Department among prospective
students, their families and Clark alumni. Kulik will also identify grant
opportunities for special programming, speakers and professional development for
the department.
Kulik is entering his eighth season as Clark’s men’s
soccer coach. Over the last two years, Kulik has guided the squad to both
regional and national acclaim. In 2006, Clark was ranked nationally by two
organizations – 20th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
and eighth by D3kicks.com. Regionally, the program has been in the top-10 for 17
consecutive weeks over the last two seasons. As the 2005 NEWMAC Coach of the
Year, Kulik led the Cougars to 15 wins that season—the second most in the
program’s 86-year history.
Entering his fifth year at Clark, Phillips has been
committed to providing a competitive and academically recognized men’s and
women’s swimming and diving program. In addition to coaching, Phillips has
served as Admissions liaison with an emphasis on recruiting. He will continue to
have a role in both capacities, and act as Academic Outreach Coordinator,
administering the department faculty mentor program and assisting with
compliance.
Phillips has led the women’s team to two consecutive
winning seasons and a seventh-place finish at the New England Women’s and Men’s
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship meet last season—its highest finish
since 2001. The men’s program has also experienced its share of success under
Phillips. After capturing only three dual-meet victories from 2003 to 2005, the
Cougars rebounded to post a combined 12 wins over the last two seasons. Both
programs have consistently been recognized by the College Swim Coaches
Association of America with All-Academic honors.
Clark appoints first full-time rowing coach
After serving part-time for the past four years,
Erick Thiemke has been promoted to the first full-time men’s and women’s rowing
head coach at Clark.
“I am thrilled to have been elevated to full-time
status,” says Thiemke. “I have spent the last four years developing the program
and improving its competitiveness throughout the region. It’s exciting to
continue the work on a constant and consistent level.”
Thiemke led the Cougars to a pair of consecutive
ECAC Championship (2004-05) appearances, where the women’s varsity four
qualified for the finals and finished sixth overall in 2004.
