Crew alumni medal in championships
Four former members of Clark’s rowing program competed in the U.S. Master’s National Rowing Championships held on Lake Quinsigamond in August. Ashley Blake ’05, Suzanne Botta ’99, Larry Kurzner ’83 and Arthur Lee ’57 returned to their home course. Although they represented different rowing clubs, they maintain a strong connection to Clark and have fond memories of their teammates and coaches.
Blake, a recent graduate who is currently in the fifth-year master’s degree program at Clark, won gold medals in the Women’s AA 2X and the Women’s AA 4+. Botta, a coxswain for the New Haven Rowing Club, directed the Women’s B 8+ to victory. Kurzner, the Commodore for the Saugatuck Rowing Club, finished first in both the Men’s Club C 8+ and the Mixed C 8+. L ee, who just started sculling last January after a 48-year hiatus from rowing, competed for the Lake Lanier Rowing Club in the Men’s G 1X. Lee also met up with Head Coach Erick Thiemke to take a look at Clark’s new boathouse, the Donahue Rowing Center.
New crew shell built for speed
The University recently purchased a Vespoli V1 racing shell for the crew program.
The newest model Vespoli shell was introduced last year and has already proven to be one of the fastest shells on the water—if not the fastest. The shell has not yet been named and will be painted red. Head Coach Erick Thiemke is very excited about the new shell and is confident that it will help continuing efforts to move the program forward.
Meet Clark’s new cougar
At the start of the 2005—06 academic year, the Athletics Department unveiled a new logo for Clark athletics. Developed with significant input from coaches and Athletics Department staff, the new logo features a fierce cougar lunging toward its opponents. It also features the official colors of Clark athletics—scarlet and white—and a typeface that is compatible with the official University logo. The new cougar was officially launched at the Cougar Crawl Pep Rally held during orientation (see page 28) and is used on team uniforms, athletics brochures and other materials, as well as on signs, T-shirts and other Clark clothing.
Clark’s first pro softball player finishes first season
Softball standout Jen Scavone ’05 recently finished her rookie season for the New England Riptide in the National Pro Fastpitch League.
Scavone, a two-time first team All-America selection, is the first Clark softball player to compete at the professional lev el. She finished the season batting .212 with 21 hits, 11 runs scored and 10 RBI. In addition, she had a home run, 18 walks and two stolen bases. Highlighting the season was a home run against softball sensation Jennie Finch who plays for the Chicago Bandits. Finch, one of the most decorated players in NCAA Softball history, was a two-time recipient of the Honda Award, presented to the nation’s best softball player, a three-time first-team All-American and a member of the 2004 Olympic Softball team that won gold in Athens.
