In Memoriam (fall 2005)
Ishier Jacobson '43, retired public utility executive, World War II veteran and longtime Clark supporter, died July 20, 2005, at age 83.
Mr. Jacobson was born in Worcester, Mass., and was raised in Waterbury, Conn. After earning a B.A. from Clark, he went on to receive an M.S. in engineering from Harvard University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard a submarine in the Atlantic arena and in many major engagements in the Pacific aboard the battleship U.S.S. Washington. Mr. Jacobson moved to Stamford in 1954 to work at Citizens Utilities Co. During his 36-year career there, he was named president in 1970 and CEO in 1981, a position he held until retirement in 1990.
A dedicated alumnus, Mr. Jacobson was a leadership donor to Cl
ark for more than 50 years. He was a charter member of the Jonas Clark Fellows, the University¹s leading group of annual donors, and a member of the President¹s Circle. He supported Clark¹s Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the new Dolan Field House. Mr. Jacobson was also an active participant in the life of the University as a member of the former President¹s Council, a guest speaker for the Graduate School of Management and a member of the Friends of Clark Athletics.
In addition, Mr. Jacobson gave much to his community, serving as chairman of Silver Hill Hospital, Connecticut Ballet and the Harvard Graduate School Alumni Council, and playing key roles at the University of Connecticut¹s Stamford campus, Jewish Family Service and Stamford Historical Society, among others. He was also an avid tennis player.
Mildred Jean McIntyre M.A. '73, Ph.D. '75 died unexpectedly at her home in Cambridge
Mass., on July 5, 2005. Her family held a private service in Boston on July 14, 2005. A celebration of her life was held in late summer 2005 in Boston.
Dr. McIntyre was a pioneer among African American psychologists. After receiving her doctorate from Clark, she subsequently worked as a psychologist with noted institutions in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Hawaii, Alaska and in Europe. She leaves her mother, Theodora G. McIntyre, and three siblings as well as extended family, friends and colleagues. The family encourages alumni who knew Dr. McIntyre to send any words of remembrance to the McIntyre Family at P.O. Box 990124, Boston MA, 02199-0124.
Ralph Rose, prominent Worcester resident and ardent supporter of Clark, died July 29, 2005.
Mr. Rose was born in Worcester and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Classical High School and attended Boston University. After college, he entered the family business, the Standard Paint Stores, and later was a cofounder of the Fair Discount Department store chain.
Mr. Rose and his late wife Shirley, his brother Sidney Rose '41 and his wife Rosalie left a lasting legacy at Clark when they established the Rose Professorship in Holocaust Studies and Modern Jewish History and Culture. Held by Debórah Dwork, the Rose Professorship is the first fully endowed chair in Holocaust history. The professorship honors the memory of Ralph's and Sidney's father and the memory of their family members lost in the Holocaust.
Ralph and Sidney Rose also funded the Rose Graduate Student Fellowship to support a student in Clark's Ph.D. program in Holocaust History‹the first doctoral program of its kind in the world. They also contributed significant support to the Rose Library, named in their honor, at the University's Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
"Ralph and Shirley Rose, and Sidney and Rosalie Rose have left an indelible mark on Clark University, and on the field of Holocaust history," says President John Bassett. "Ralph Rose is deeply missed by the Clark community."
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Program, Clark University, 950 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610.
