Catching the Cougar Spirit

New Clarkies received an injection of Clark pride through a special Cougar Crawl Pep Rally held during the Week One orientation program. More than 350 students, faculty and staff attended the event, which was held outside the Dolan Field House.

The night highlighted Clark athletics, with a display of team banners, information tables and a formal introduction of Clark's fall varsity athletes, coaches and the Athletics Department staff. There were performances by the Counterpoints and Clark Bars, who performed the school song "Fiat Lux," and the Clark Christian Campus Ministry Step Team. Students, faculty and staff enjoyed popcorn, cotton candy, lemonade and raffles for door prizes. Five lucky students were selected for a chance to win a semester of free tuition by shooting (and making) a lay-up, free-throw, three-point shot and half-court shot in 30 seconds. The contest will be held during a Midnight Madness event in October.

Robin Cohen '06, student orientation coordinator for campus unity, explains that the Cougar Crawl was part of a larger effort during Week One to promote school pride across campus.

"I really love Clark," Cohen says. "I've been very involved with the Student Alumni Relations Committee and other student groups, and I've seen a lot of regions of unity. But the campus as a whole lacked it."

To generate Clark spirit among the incoming first-years, Cohen blanketed the campus in Clark's scarlet and white colors, T-shirts, signs, decorations, tote bags, were all in red and white. Special "Clark 101" sessions introduced different offices, such as Information Technology Services and University Police, to students in a more personal way. Cohen also created displays of campus photos from past yearbooks, collected gift certificates from Worcester businesses for first-year students to familiarize them with the city, and every first-year student received a free athletics T-shirt, in red, of course. Cohen also worked with Clark's more than 80 student organizations to create welcome packages for first-year students with items provided by the student groups. All of these activities, Cohen notes, supported the theme for Week One, "You're not just a number, you're a Clarkie: Celebrating 118 years of tradition."
