Clark University - Clark News fall 2003
Alumni news and notes (fall 2003)
Dear Alumni, parents and friends,
The fall is an especially busy time at Clark. The campus is bustling with students, faculty and staff, the new academic year is in full swing and many events are taking place.
The fall is equally busy for the Alumni Association. For example, more than 30 Worcester-area alumni and friends participated in the Alumni Association's Annual Move-In Day, helping members of the Class of 2007 move into their residence halls. Our Fall Homecoming and Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Oct. 3 and 4 also brought many of you back to campus. I'm sure being at Clark in the fall brought back many warm memories for those who attended. But if returning to the University isn't possible for you, there are other ways to maintain your Clark connection.
In recent months, for example, many of you have attended our regional events to meet Provost David Angel and hear about his initiatives for the University. These and other regional events give you the opportunity to meet Clark alumni and friends in your area, get up-to-date information about the University and learn how you can help with some of Clark's ongoing initiatives, such as admissions and fundraising.
Regional alumni communities play an increasingly important role in these events. Communities in cities such as Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., have provided outstanding venues for events. In addition to helping plan regional events, community participants also serve as contacts for other alumni, parents and students who need information about a particular region and help Clark's admissions efforts by promoting the University.
Clark's regional communities are having an impact on the University, but there is a great deal more we hope to accomplish in this area. This year, former Alumni Association President Elyse Darefsky '79 is leading the regional community effort as the new volunteer coordinator. Elyse, who has been an active alumna ever since she graduated from Clark, will work with alumni to enhance existing communities and establish new ones all over the world. Elyse also hopes to improve communication among community participants and among the communities themselves. There is much to gain by sharing thoughts and experiences and combining efforts.
In the coming months, Elyse and our community leaders will reach out to alumni, parents and friends to enlist support for these communities. I hope you will help the effort by joining a community in your area. Your participation and input will help us keep more alumni, parents and friends connected to Clark. In return, you get to attend some great Clark events and meet more people who share your commitment to the University.
Sincerely,
Dimitry Anselme '93
Alumni Association President

Alumni Admissions News
The Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) continues to grow in membership as well as in the activities that we accomplish each year. With that in mind, I would like to focus some attention on the admissions process.
Our recruitment goal this year is 4,100 applicants, and alumni volunteers are crucial to this effort. AAP members conduct admissions interviews, represent Clark at college fairs, host information sessions and contact prospective students. We have 600 AAP members working on all of these activities. Their commitment is amazing, and we will continue to use each member as much as possible. But even if you aren't participating in this program formally—although I encourage you to contact me and join AAP—you can still help in many ways.
First, if you have relatives, friends, or coworkers who are conducting a college search, talk to them about your alma mater. If you've already done this, ask them again how their search is going and tell them more about your Clark experience. Offer them the fee waiver form on page 22 of this issue, so the student can apply to Clark without cost.
Lastly, you may wish to consider writing a letter of recommendation for a Clark applicant. Tell us why you feel the student would be a good match for Clark. We look for students who will be prepared to succeed academically and who will become involved and engaged students on our campus. Our holistic approach to application review allows us to take many factors into consideration, but academic preparation is most important. We evaluate this by looking at the applicants' academic course load as well as their grade-point average.
Other important components of the application are the standardized-test scores, recommendations, essay and description of extracurricular activities, which help us evaluate a student's potential and understand more about the student as a person. Currently, Clark students hail from 44 states and 52 countries. Each student contributes his/her own individual experiences, opinions and ideas to Clark's vibrant and diverse community.
If you would like additional information, I encourage you to contact me at 508-793-7431 or aap@clarku.edu. I look forward to another successful year with the AAP team and thank you for your ongoing support.
