In Memoriam (fall 2002)

Jeanne X. Kasperson A.B. '59,

a longtime member of Clark's faculty and staff, died Aug. 27, 2002.

Professor Kasperson earned a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago in 1962 and a master's degree in library science from Simmons College in 1967. After working in academic libraries at the University of Chicago, the University of Connecticut and Michigan State University, she joined Clark in 1977 as a research librarian for the Hazard Assessment Group. She served as director of Clark's Jeanne X. Kasperson Research Library since 1991.

Throughout her career, Professor Kasperson was also an active researcher, pursuing scholarly interests in the general area of global environmental risk assessment. In 1993, she was promoted to research associate professor in Clark's George Perkins Marsh Institute. She was the author of more than 80 articles, books and technical reports, editor of several journals and recipient of many research grants. She is also recognized by her colleagues as a key contributor to much of the research undertaken by the George Perkins Marsh Institute. Professor Kasperson was particularly fond of words and tracking down information that others believed could not be found. For the last two years, Professor Kasperson was on leave from Clark, with her husband and Clark Professor Roger Kasperson '59, conducting research at the Stockholm Environment Institute in Sweden.

"Thanks to her dedication, enthusiasm and energy and ever-present eye for an acquisition bargain, Jeanne is in large part responsible for the Jeanne X. Kasperson Research Library's exceptional, internationally recognized collection," says Provost Frederick Greenaway.

In recognition of her seminal role in establishing the Jeanne X. Kasperson Research Library, the University will dedicate the library to Professor Kasperson at a special event planned for the spring and has established a fund in her memory. Donations may be sent to University Advancement, Clark University, 950 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610-1477. Checks should be made payable to Clark University.
