Clark University - Clark News Fall 2002

Alumni news and notes (fall 2002)

I am pleased to share with you the exciting start of this academic year. On Aug. 23, the Class of 2006 arrived on campus, and alumni were among the first to welcome them into our Clark family. The Alumni Association hosted another successful First-Year Student Move-In Day, with many alumni helping students move into the residence halls (see story page 12). Susan Starr '69, a former Alumni Association President, even helped students move into the room she occupied in Wright Hall 37 years ago.

I would like to take this moment to thank all the alumni volunteers who gave their time and energy during the past year to recruit this class of outstanding students. Working closely with the admissions staff, we completed 784 admissions interview assignments and attended more than 100 college fairs. We organized admissions receptions and hosted many summer send-off receptions for new students and their families throughout the country (see page 17). Thanks to your efforts we have an outstanding class, and one of the largest incoming classes in recent years.

This fall, we also welcomed several new faculty members to the Clark community (see story page 4). The new Traina Center for the Arts opened in September and was celebrated with many special events in October. And work continues on the Granger Field Project, which includes the reconstruction of the athletic fields on Beaver Street and the construction of a new field house named in honor of Joan '60 and Tom '62 Dolan, Clark's senior vice president.

These and other projects would not be possible without your support. If you haven't had the time or opportunity to help us in the past, I encourage you to join our volunteer efforts. Talk about Clark to a neighbor or friend, interview a student in your area, attend a college fair, or join the Alumni Admissions Program. You might consider mentoring a current student, accompanying a prospective student on a campus visit, joining our career network efforts, becoming a class agent, joining an alumni club, or helping to plan your reunion. For more ideas, log onto the Clark Alumni Online Community at www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/CLK/. There is something for everyone who is looking for a way to support Clark.

To honor those of you who have already volunteered on Clark's behalf, we are planning an Alumni Volunteer Recognition Celebration, which will kick off Reunion 2003 on Thursday, May 15. All alumni volunteers will be invited back to Clark to celebrate their support of the University and be recognized for their efforts.

The Alumni Association has planned many fun and exciting programs for the coming year. These events are listed in the alumni calendar on the inside back cover of this issue of Clarknews and online at www.clarku.edu/alumni/regional. We are also working with our current alumni clubs and expanding our efforts into Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., Atlanta, Philadelphia and Tampa, Fla. Your participation in these events and clubs, and your contributions to the Clark Fund, are particularly appreciated. Please remember that as a Clarkie, you can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Dimitry Anselme '93
Alumni Association President

Alumni Admissions News

I'd like to offer my thanks to all of our 535 active Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) members, who helped to recruit an outstanding Class of 2006. We are now busy recruiting the Class of 2007, and I would like to share with you some important admissions dates this fall.

As alumni who have experienced the wonderful opportunities at Clark, I would like to ask for your help in encouraging prospective students and families to visit the University. Please share this information with those who are beginning their college search. Our experience proves that students who visit Clark are much more likely to enroll (36 percent) than those who do not visit (10 percent). And remember, as alumni, you can complete an application fee waiver form for a student whose application to Clark you would like to endorse (see page 19).

As you talk to potential Clarkies about a campus visit, remind them that, in addition to our traditional campus visits, we are holding several Open Houses this fall. Two University Open Houses, on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Monday, Nov. 11, give prospective students and their families a chance to learn more about the many opportunities at Clark. Some of the sessions include information on admissions, financial aid, academics and extracurricular activities. On Nov. 11, students can also sit in on a class. The Science Open House on Oct. 26 gives students an in-depth look at our science and math programs. And the Arts Open House on Nov. 2 offers students a closer look at our visual and performing arts programs.

The Admissions Office also offers daily visits that may include a campus tour or information session. These are great ways to learn about Clark and what's happening on campus. Prospective students and their families can find more detailed information about campus visit options on the Clark Web site at www.clarku.edu/visit.

Lastly, if you are in the area and wish to visit campus, feel free to contact me. There are many exciting new facilities, programs, faculty and students on campus. Whether you stop by for a walk down memory lane, or are recommending Clark to a friend or family member, we would love to see you. We would also appreciate your help in recruiting future Clarkies. If you are interested in joining the AAP, please call me at 508-793-7431, or send an e-mail to tuber@clarku.edu.
