Alumni news and notes (Fall 2001)
Letter to alumni
Dear Clark Alumni,
Many great things are happening at Clark as we begin this new academic year. Over the summer, the campus was buzzing with several physical plant projects. Ground was broken on the new Traina Center for the Arts, Bullock and Estabrook halls were renovated, and the second phase of renovations to the Kneller Athletic Center was completed. In addition, the University hired 11 new faculty members and Clark’s first chief information officer, Cathy Smith.
This fall, many alumni and friends are attending our regional events to meet President John Bassett and his wife Kay, and to talk with faculty about their cutting-edge research. The Alumni Athlete Homecoming and Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held on Sept. 29, were a big success. And more than 30 Worcester-area alumni and friends participated in the Alumni Association’s Annual Move-In Day, helping the Class of 2005 move into Bullock and Wright halls.
The Alumni Association’s Strategic Plan is promoting greater cooperation among alumni, administration, faculty and students. The additional resources provided by the Board of Trustees have given us the springboard we need to set our strategic initiatives in motion with efforts such as the development of an on-line alumni community on the Clark Web site and alumni clubs.
In the coming months, you will find even more opportunities to stay connected to Clark. Join your Reunion Committee to help plan Reunion 2002, May 16—19. Support the University’s $100 million capital campaign, Clark 2000: A New Age of Discovery, which is now in its final months. Attend one of the many alumni and friends receptions, held across the country and throughout the world. Join one of the new alumni clubs in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles (see page 18). And visit the Clark alumni on-line community, to be launched in late fall, to connect with former classmates and friends, career resources, life-long Clark e-mail accounts, alumni chat rooms and other networking opportunities. By May 2002, the print version of the Alumni Directory will also be complete.
This is your chance to demonstrate how much you value your Clark education. Share your ideas with the Alumni Affairs staff, Alumni Association first vice president Dimitry Anselme ’93, second vice president Faith Linsky ’76, or me. We look forward to seeing you at future Clark receptions and events throughout the country and on the Clark campus.
Sincerely,
Larry Hershoff ’71
Alumni Association President
P.S. A special thank you to those who continue to nurture the Clark Network—improving our visibility in the world. Someone within a thousand feet of you probably went to Clark. Don’t be strangers anymore. Share your Clark pride!
Alumni Admissions News
The Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) is expanding and we need your assistance.
This year, alumni volunteers and admissions staff plan to represent Clark at 200 college fairs and host 15 to 20 “Clark on the Road: Information Sessions.” In addition, we will offer admission interviews to all prospective students who apply prior to Jan. 15, 2002 (application deadline, Feb. 1). While all of these activities are essential to meeting our admissions goals, I would like to specifically address our need for alumni interviewers.
The admissions process is ultimately a series of conversations. The admission interview at Clark is part of this process and is strongly recommended for all applicants. The interview allows prospective students and alumni to share their interests and discuss ideas about the college selection process. Interviews help the Admissions Office understand the students’ background and gauge their interest in Clark, while prospective students gain a better understanding of Clark’s distinctive qualities and get to learn from the alumni perspective. Interviews conducted by admissions staff and alumni volunteers receive the same consideration.
The AAP is seeking alumni volunteers to complete an expected 1,500 interviews this year. The frequency of interview assignments will peak between November and February. We encourage you to join AAP and commit to conducting a minimum of three interviews. We will provide you with training material prior to assigning interviews, which can be conducted at your office, your home or even at a coffee shop. The average interview lasts about 30 minutes. As a representative of the University, alumni interviewers also answer questions from parents. And after each interview, alumni volunteers must submit an interview report to the Admissions Office.
The expansion of the alumni interview program represents the next phase in the development of the AAP. As the University competes for top students from around the country, there are few resources more valuable than our alumni. Your stories about what makes Clark special are compelling and will help students understand how Clark can change their lives.
Please contact me in the Admissions Office with any questions, or to request an AAP membership form. I can be reached by phone at 1-800 GO CLARK, 508-793-7431, or e-mail at tuber@clarku.edu.
