"Given Clark's rich academic tradition, how do you envision your role as trustee in shaping Clark University's mission in today's changing society?"
Life at Clark was a very enriching experience for me. I became involved in student government and worked closely with other students and various administrators on a wide range of University issues. As a student representative to the Board of Trustees, I contributed the student perspective on a number of issues to the Trustees. The community of friends, professors and administrators at Clark helped establish my foundation and confidence to meet the challenges that I have faced over the past 25 years.
Our ability on an individual and community level to succeed in today's changing society depends on our ability to listen to others, contemplate perspectives and then, very importantly, lead. In my 25 years since graduating from Clark, I have volunteered thousands of hours toward furthering the interests of low-income and disadvantaged persons, particularly in the areas of housing and supportive services. I served six years, with the last two years as president, on the Board of a nonprofit providing housing and related services to low-income seniors. I am currently in my 11th year as a primary policymaker and spokesperson for the District of Columbia Building Industry Association on housing and related economic development issues, with significant focus on the challenges that face our neighborhoods and low-income residents. I am committed to understanding the issues and seeking solutions that take into consideration the people and institutions that are impacted. Much of my professional career as an attorney is working to solve problems and achieve solutions.
Clark is a unique and special institution, and I would be honored to assist the Board of Trustees as it undertakes the many challenges facing Clark, not only as an educational institution, but also as a community that nurtures the development of its students to face the many challenges that lie ahead.
