Email journal: July 5, 2006, Worcester The past couple of weeks have been somewhat interesting. Although a lot of people have been on vacation, a lot of things have been getting done on the project. Erin and I started a new block group of houses and the first thing that must be done is to pass out flyers to every apartment unit in the entire block. While doing this we also have to try and count how many apartments (units) there are in the block group. Erin and I walked around on a very hot afternoon and tried our best to count the units in the new block. It is somewhat difficult to try and figure out how many apartments there are in a house because usually we can only go by how many mail boxes or doorbells there. A lot of the time they are poorly labeled but we did our best. We started talking to a group of people sitting out on a porch of one of the houses we were putting flyers on and managed to get a survey scheduled with a teenage boy. Gioia and I went back to the same house a couple of days later and had a very successful survey. A lot of people have trouble with the survey because it is so long and some of the questions are confusing, but he did a great job. Although surveying and flyering went rather well, we ran into a little trouble with the oral history project. The meeting last Tuesday was only attended by one person besides Erin and myself. The time commitment was a problem for some people in the group and some members had to drop out. However, Erin did manage to gather a definite group of seven members to do the oral history and changed the meetings to only once a week, so hopefully it will still turn out well! Jill |
